If you're applying to a research-based graduate program, you may need to identify a faculty supervisor before submitting your application. Supervisor requirements vary by program, so be sure to carefully review the admission requirements for your program of interest.
Connecting with a potential supervisor is also a great way to learn more about a program, explore research opportunities, and determine whether your interests align.
Ready to get started?
Follow the steps below to explore research opportunities, identify potential supervisors, and begin the conversation about your graduate studies journey.
Step 1: Explore Graduate Programs
Start by identifying the graduate program that best matches your academic interests and career goals.
As you research potential programs, look for:
- Research areas that align with your interests
- Faculty members whose work relates to your proposed research topic
- Faculty profiles marked as accepting graduate students
- Current calls for graduate students or research opportunities
Step 2: Review Faculty Research Profiles
Visit the Research Supervisors section of your program's webpage and explore faculty research profiles.
Before reaching out, take time to:
- Read about the professor's research interests
- Review recent publications, projects, or creative work
- Consider how your interests connect with their expertise

Step 3: Contact a Potential Supervisor
Your email should be personalized and demonstrate that you have taken the time to learn about the professor's research.
Below is an example of what to include in your outreach email.
- Introduction: Briefly introduce yourself, including your current or previous degree, institution, and areas of academic interest.
- Research Interests: Describe the research topic or area you hope to explore and explain how it connects to the professor's work.
- Why You're Reaching Out: Share why you believe they would be a good fit to supervise your research.
- Attachments: Include your CV and unofficial transcript, if available.
- Closing: Thank them for their time and indicate your interest in discussing potential supervision opportunities.
Step 4: Follow Up
If a faculty member expresses interest, be prepared to discuss your academic background, research interests, and goals in greater detail.
Once a supervisor has agreed to support your application, follow the instructions provided by your graduate program regarding supervisor identification and admission requirements.
Need Help Finding a Supervisor?
If you're unsure who to contact, or if you have not found a suitable supervisor, reach out to the Graduate Program Coordinator or Chair for guidance. They may be able to suggest additional faculty members whose expertise aligns with your interests.
You can also connect with the Student Recruitment Officer – Graduate Studies for support exploring programs, research areas, and potential supervisory matches.
If a Supervisor Isn't Available
Occasionally, faculty members may be unavailable due to sabbaticals, leaves, existing supervisory commitments, or research specialization.
If this happens, you may be able to refine your research topic to align with available expertise. In some cases, you may wish to explore future admission opportunities.
