Things I Wish I Knew Before Living at Nipissing University
First-year student tips from current Lakers to help you start strong at NU
Moving out on your own for the first time? You’ve packed the basics, but there are a few insider tips that can make your first semester way smoother. We asked current Lakers to share what they wish they had known before starting university and living on their own, and their answers go beyond the usual packing list. From finding friends to discovering the best campus trails, here’s how to start your first year one step ahead.
Join a Student Group or Program Chat
When you accept your offer, you’re officially a Laker, but you don’t have to wait until classes begin to start meeting people. Many programs have group chats, Discord servers, or Instagram communities where students swap advice, ask questions about classes, and share more about themselves.
Early connections mean you’ll see familiar names and faces when you arrive, and you might even meet your future roommate or project partner before setting foot on campus.
Tip: Search your program name + “Nipissing University” on Instagram or Facebook to find groups, or check with the Nipissing University Student Union (NUSU).

Learn to Cook Easy Meals
If you’re living in a suite-style residence or an off-campus apartment, you’ll have your own kitchen. It’s a huge perk, if you know what to do with it. While North Bay has amazing restaurants and cafés, having quick, quick and easy recipes on hand is a lifesaver during busy weeks.
Try mastering:
Explore the Campus (and Local) Trails Early
Nipissing University’s campus backs right onto the Laurentian Escarpment Conservation Area, home to trails that are perfect for clearing your head, taking study breaks, or getting fresh air between classes. North Bay itself also offers a variety of all levels trails and hiking paths worth exploring throughout the year.
Start with:
- The Lookout Trail – a simple nature walk right on campus with beautiful views
- Duchesnay Falls – a must-see in every season, a five-minute drive from campus
- Laurier Woods – various marked trails found near Northgate Shopping Centre and Memorial Gardens, great for walking, running, biking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing
Get to Know North Bay
North Bay isn’t just where your campus is; it’s your home for the next few years. The more you know about it, the easier settling in will be.
Make sure to check out:
- North Bay Waterfront – perfect for sunsets
- Local festivals and events – like Downtown Gallery Hop, Bay Block Party
- Farmers’ Markets – fresh food and local treats
- Bus routes – handy for grocery runs and winter travel
Stay Organized for Your First Week
The first week of university is busy, between orientation events, finding your classes, and adjusting to living on your own, it can feel like a lot all at once. Staying organized will help you settle in faster and make the transition smoother.
A few things that can help:
- Keep a simple weekly schedule – write down class times, orientation activities, and social events so nothing sneaks up on you.
- Set up a daily routine – balancing meals, laundry, and downtime early on helps make your space feel like home.
- Plan out a few easy meals – knowing what you’ll cook (and when) saves you from last-minute stress.
- Stay on top of essentials – things like groceries, toiletries, and bus passes are easy to forget in the excitement of week one.
- Make your space your own – a few comfort items from home or personal touches go a long way when adjusting to a new environment.
The more you prepare, whether it’s connecting with classmates, learning a few recipes, or exploring the trails, the more confident you’ll feel when classes start. And your future self will thank you.
