Jack Lockhart - Doctor of Education

Jack Lockhart received an honorary Doctor of Education and delivered the convocation address to the graduates of Nipissing’s Schulich School of Education, Junior/Intermediate division on Wednesday, June 9, 2010.

Jack Lockhart is a local educator who spent 36 years as a teacher, with 31 as a principal. For the past eight years, Lockhart has worked as a supervising professor and faculty advisor in Nipissing University’s Schulich School of Education. In parallel to his career in education, Lockhart has pursued a second career as a professional artist. Recognized internationally, his creative work has been commissioned both publicly and privately by corporations and individuals. In recognition of his achievements in a third professional area, as a competitive curler, Lockhart was inducted into the North Bay Sports Hall of Fame in 2008.

Jon Dellandrea - Doctor of Letters

Jon Dellandrea, received the honorary degree, Doctor of Letters and delivered the convocation address to graduates of Nipissing’s Faculty of Arts and Science and Faculty of Applied and Professional Studies on Friday, June 11, 2010.

Raised in North Bay, Jon Dellandrea is one of the world’s most noted figures in university advancement. He currently serves as a counsel to the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, assisting with the establishment of a major endowment campaign. From 2005 – 2008, he was the pro-vice-chancellor (Development and External Affairs) at the University of Oxford, where he launched a $2.5 billion dollar campaign. As vice-president and chief development officer at the University of Toronto, a position he held from 1994 – 2005, Dellandrea headed the single largest fundraising campaign in the history of Canadian Universities, raising more than $1.2 billion for student aid and endowed chairs. He has been awarded the Order of Canada, the Laureate Award of the Institute for Charitable Giving in the United States, the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education and the Outstanding Fundraising Executive Award from the National Society of Fundraising Executives.

Marsha Greenfield - Doctor of Education

Marsha Greenfield received the honorary degree, Doctor of Education and delivered the convocation address to the graduates of Nipissing’s Schulich School of Education, Intermediate/Senior division and Master of Education degree program on Thursday, June 10, 2010.

Martha Greenfield is a founding member and past co-ordinator of the Nipissing Transition House. A former student of Nipissing University, Greenfield has worked diligently throughout her career on women’s issues and specifically issues related to violence against women. In 1996, she was appointed to the Ontario Criminal Injuries Compensation Board, and served as Chair of that organization from 1998 to 2008. Greenfield is the recipient of the Amelia Rising Ten Year Anniversary Award, the Commemorative Medal for the 125th Anniversary of Canada, and the 1986 Woman of the Year Award from the North Bay Professional Women’s Club.

Mike Harris - Doctor of Letters

Mike Harris, received the honorary degree, Doctor of Letters and delivered the convocation address to graduates of Nipissing’s Faculty of Arts and Science and Faculty of Applied and Professional Studies on Friday, June 11, 2010.

Raised in North Bay and educated at the North Bay Teachers’ College (the precursor to Nipissing’s Schulich School of Education), Mike Harris was the 22nd Premier of Ontario, a position he held for two terms, from 1995 – 2002. Harris is widely recognized as a driving force in providing increased economic opportunities for northern Ontario by working to make Highways 11 and 69 into four-lane highways. He was supportive to the process that saw Nipissing University receive its charter as an independent degree-granting institution in 1992 and was instrumental to the SuperBuild initiative that allowed Nipissing to build Zytaruk Hall in 2002. He also helped to address funding inequities for small, northern institutions in Ontario with the introduction of the Differentiation Grant. In 2008, Harris volunteered as an honorary co-chair for the Nipissing University and Canadore College Learning Library fundraising campaign.

National Chief Shawn Atleo - Doctor of Education

National Chief Shawn Atleo received the honorary degree, Doctor of Education. He delivered the convocation address to the graduates of Nipissing’s Schulich School of Education, Primary/Junior division on Wednesday, June 9, 2010.

Shawn A-in-chut Atleo is the National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations and the Chancellor of Vancouver Island University. He is a hereditary Chief from the Ahousaht First Nation, located on Vancouver Island. He served two terms as Regional Chief of the British Columbia Assembly of First Nations. National Chief Atleo’s first and foremost commitment is to ensure the well-being of all First-Nations, Inuit and Métis people and to ensure there is access and opportunity for a healthy and optimistic future. He focuses on empowerment of the people and their communities towards self-determination and hope for the future.

2010 Convocation Address

Paul Quarrington - Doctor of Letters

Paul Quarrington posthumously received the honorary degree, Doctor of Letters. His daughter, Carson Quarrington accepted the honorary degree and delivered the convocation address to graduates of Nipissing’s Faculty of Arts and Science and Concurrent Education program on Thursday, June 10, 2010.

Paul Quarrington is recognized as one of Canada’s most influential literary figures. A novelist, musician, screenwriter and non-fiction writer, Quarrington’s work has garnered numerous awards. His novel King Leary was awarded the Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour in 1988 and was a finalist for Trillium Book Award. In 1989, his novel Whale Music won the Governor General’s Award for Fiction. His novel Galveston was shortlisted for the prestigious Giller Prize in 2004. In 2009, the Writers' Trust of Canada awarded Quarrington the Matt Cohen Prize for a distinguished lifetime contribution to Canadian literature. Quarrington also taught creative writing for more than 20 years, served as the Chair of the Writers’ Union of Canada and was a board member of both PEN Canada and Fringe Theatre Toronto. Quarrington died from lung cancer on January 21, 2010.
