NU hosting international conference on sport psychology, psychomotor learning
Starting today, Nipissing University will play host to the annual conference for the Canadian Society for Psychomotor Learning & Sport Psychology/Société Canadienne D'Apprentissage Psychomoteur et de Psychologie du Sport (SCAPPS), October 15 & 20-22, 2021.
This is the first time Nipissing University has hosted the conference which has been held annually since 1977. This year’s virtual event is expected to attract approximately 300 faculty and students from across Canada as well as international attendees from the USA, Germany, Netherlands, and Australia.
“Although we wish we could host our colleagues in person to show off our beautiful campus and state of the art facilities, we are thrilled to be able to host the conference virtually and showcase the world-class research being undertaken by our students and faculty in the field of sport and exercise psychology and psychomotor behaviour,” said Dr. Barbi Law, conference organizer, and professor in the School of Physical and Health Education.
Over the course of four days, the conference will feature over 200 presentations as well as two highly acclaimed international keynote speakers: Dr. Cathy Craig, Ulster University in the UK, and Dr. Nikos Ntoumanis, University of Southern Denmark. Dr. Tanya Berry (University of Alberta) and Dr. Jim Lyons (McMaster University) will also present their cutting-edge research in the fields of sport and exercise psychology and psychomotor behaviour as the two distinguished lectures for the event. In addition, the conference will offer unique activities for students, an Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Symposium, opportunities for social and professional networking, and live entertainment to close out the event courtesy of Comics Not Otherwise Specified.
Nipissing University will be well-represented at the conference, with students, postdoctoral fellows, and recent graduates from both the MSc Kin program and Bachelor or Physical and Health Education (BPHE) program taking part to present their research.
The committee responsible for organizing the first virtual conference for the Society is comprised of faculty from six universities - including Nipissing’s own Barbi Law and Steve Hansen – and is chaired by Dr. Diane Ste-Marie of the University of Ottawa. A team of approximately 30 student volunteers from various universities, including members of the NORTH PA Lab, also contributed to the event.
