Nipissing University's Biology programs have something to offer everyone. With an emphasis on ecology and field studies, Nipissing takes full advantage of the lakes and forests at its doorstep. Field trips and student projects are vital components of the Biology programs and most courses include a combination of lecture and laboratory instruction.
Biology students have the opportunity to learn in state-of-the-art facilities including teaching and research labs, an animal museum, a fish lab, a herbarium, and a spectacular roof-top greenhouse. Students can simply walk out the back door to take advantage of a wide-range of aquatic and forest environments on Nipissing University's 235 hectare campus. Algonquin Provincial Park, Massasauga Provincial Parks and the old-growth forests of Temagami are nearby and provide even more opportunities for teaching and research. Biology students also have access to the Nipissing-Alcan Environmental Research Preserve—the University's own wilderness preserve of over 300 hectares of lakes and forests within a half hour drive of campus.
An intensive field camp experience is offered to all fourth-year students taking an Honours Biology program. This unique excursion allows students to sample, collect and identify organisms and environmental data which contribute to a major report and presentation. The honours degree also includes a significant, faculty-supervised field or laboratory research project that involves a written dissertation. Past research projects have included planning for genetics experiments for upcoming Canadian Space Agency missions.
