The adjustment to life as a university student can often be challenging. If something is bothering you -- it could also be interfering with your studies. There are people who can help. Confidential, individualized counselling support is available at no cost to all full-time, part-time, undergraduate and graduate students at Nipissing University. Brief intervention is also available to all alumni and previously registered students.
What can you expect?
Above all else, you will be treated with the care, sensitivity and respect that you deserve as a unique person. We welcome students of all sexual orientations, ages, cultures, ethnicities and disability backgrounds.
You can also expect a thorough assessment and exploration of your needs and experiences, a mutually defined intervention plan and an opportunity to evaluate the progress and effectiveness of the counselling support. Sometimes brief intervention (i.e. only one appointment) will be needed when solutions to issues are found quickly and easily. In other cases, solutions may be reached through a more extensive approach. Your involvement is essential to determining which approach is taken.
Typical requests for personal counselling may involve matters such as:
* Interpersonal relationships and communication
* Surviving a difficult break up
* Self-confidence and self esteem
* Loneliness and isolation
* Assertiveness training
* Anxiety reactions
* Depression
* Stress management
* Conflict resolution
* Problem solving
* Motivation and concentration
* Crisis intervention
* Grief/loss issues
* Unplanned pregnancy
* Childhood/adult abuse and trauma
* Substance abuse/addictions
* Harassment and discrimination
* Sexual orientation issues
* Eating disorders and body image
* Budgeting and financial crisis
Confidentiality
Any information which you share with your counsellor will be held in the strictest of confidence. A signed consent form is required before information can be released to a third party. The policy on confidentiality of the student counselling record is always discussed fully during your first meeting with a counsellor.
Emergency Services
We do not provide a 24 hour crisis service. However, a daily intake duty schedule is maintained by the counselling office which means that a counsellor can normally be seen within an hour or two during regular working hours, if an emergency arises.
In the case of an emergency outside our normal office hours, you may contact the Crisis Intervention Program at North Bay General Hospital at (705) 495-8198 or (705) 474-8600 (Switchboard).
For an appointment, please see the Secretary for Counselling and Disability Services in Room A201 or call (705) 474-3461 and any of the following extensions:
