Nipissing's Honours degree program in Criminal Justice is unique. It provides students with the opportunity to graduate with both a university degree and a college diploma. During their four years of study, students attain valuable theoretical and practical experience in policing, corrections, legal studies, policy issues or criminology.

Criminal Justice Students

As a Criminal Justice student, you will complete core courses in criminology, law and research methods, along with specialized courses in one of five program streams: Criminal Justice Studies, Corrections, Criminology, Policing or Legal Studies and Administration.

Students who choose the Corrections, Policing or Legal Studies and Administration streams spend their third or fourth year taking applied, skill-related courses at Canadore College. These graduates receive both a college diploma (Police Foundations, Community and Justice Services and Law Clerk) and an Honours BA.

Students who choose either the Criminology or Criminal Justice Studies streams will take university courses throughout their four-year program and graduate with an Honours BA.


Placements are available in the fourth year, offering students valuable experience in the Criminal Justice System.

Criminal Justice Studies

In the Criminal Justice Studies stream students will have the opportunity to take a wide variety of courses, which provide a broad based knowledge of the crimiminal justice system. Students will also be required to take courses in Sociology and Psychology and will learn how they relate to the field of Criminal Justice.

Criminology Stream

In the Criminology stream you will learn how to understand multivariate statistics and learn essential theories and methodologies used in the field of criminology. You will also explore sociology of the family, social demography and various sociological theories. This stream provides students the opportunity to gain essential skills in communication, statistics, and analysis. Course in special topics such as Women and the Criminal Justice System are regularly offered.

Policing Stream

As a student in the Policing stream, you will closely examine the criminal justice code, the young offenders system and learn the various skills and techniques needed for a career in policing. You will complete courses at both Nipissing University and Canadore College and graduate with a college diploma and university degree. Integral to this system is the study of ethical reasoning and community policing.

Corrections Stream

Students pursuing careers in the Corrections stream will earn a college diploma and a university degree. Studies in psychology, community re-integration, programming, and interviewing are essential components of Corrections. Students are also required to complete a field placement. As a Corrections stream student, you will gain skills and knowledge in areas such as administration, group dynamics and counseling.

Legal Studies and Administration Stream

As a student in the Legal Studies and Administration Stream you will complete a total of three years at Nipissing University and one year at Canadore College graduating with a degree and a diploma. At Canadore you will complete courses in legal accounting, family law, real estate law and contracts and agreements. As a student in this stream, you will be provided with the opportunity to learn valuable legal skills as well as theoretical background of the law.
