Scholarships

Provided to support a student's education; awarded on the basis of academic achievement.

Bursaries

Non-repayable financial aid given to students, on the basis of financial need, to assist with the cost of education.

Awards

Awarded to students on a mix of criteria, including extracurricular involvement, academic performance, leadership skills, volunteer work, or other specified experiences.

Yes, you can reapply each year to increase your chances of receiving financial support.

Each scholarship, bursary, and award has different criteria, which may include academic performance, financial need, extracurricular involvement, leadership, or volunteer work.

No, the funds you receive through scholarships, bursaries, and awards do not need to be repaid...

The application period is from 1 October till 1 November, each year.

Yes, previous recipients are encouraged to reapply each year.

You may still qualify for some scholarships, bursaries, or awards, as different opportunities have different criteria. Apply anyway to see what you might be eligible for.

Nipissing University assumes liability for the payment of scholarships, bursaries and other awards only to the extent that expected gifts from donors or returns from particular investments of endowed funds are realized. The University reserves the right to make whatever changes circumstances may require, including the amendment of monetary value, selection criteria and the cancellation of particular awards. Information on the current status of any of these may be obtained by contacting the Student Awards and Financial Aid Office or by visiting the Nipissing University website at www.nipissingu.ca/studentfinancialservices. 

Students who feel that their individual circumstances are not being fairly considered when determining eligibility for the aforementioned scholarships, bursaries and awards have the right to submit a written appeal explaining their circumstances to the Undergraduate Services and Awards Committee.​

  • The Perrin Ahmad LLP Entrance Award

    Award Value $375.00

    Awarded to one full-time student entering their first year of studies at Nipissing University. The recipient must have attended a high school in the North Bay Area and must demonstrate financial need.

  • The Robbie Urquhart Resiliency Award

    Award Value $500.00

    Established to honour the life of Robbie Urquhart, the Resiliency Award supports a graduating Nipissing University student who is living with a mental illness or facing significant personal challenges such as grief, poverty, or other hardships. This award is open to domestic students only. Students are asked to share how these experiences have impacted their student journey at Nipissing and provide a supporting statement. Selected by the Nipissing University Awards Committee.

  • The ROMA Award

    Award Value $2,500.00

    The ROMA Award at Nipissing University recognizes students who have roots in rural communities and a commitment to supporting them. Two recipients will be selected annually, each receiving $2,500. To be eligible, applicants must meet the following criteria: • Be enrolled at Nipissing University in any year of study and any program. • Be a Canadian citizen. • Come from a rural community as defined by Statistics Canada. • Answer the supplementary question: “How will you use your degree to advocate for or create solutions to address issues impacting rural Ontario?” Deadline for application: November 1

  • The Stephanie Balanchuk Patterson Scholarship

    Award Value $3,600.00

    This scholarship is awarded to a high-achieving student, who has a Ukrainian background, and is from Northern Ontario This award was established with a bequest from Nipissing Alumna Stephanie Balanchuk Patterson.

    Stephanie graduated from the North Bay Normal School in 1949. What an exciting career she had. She took full advantage of every opportunity to travel and experience life that came her way. She had taught in the UK and all over Ontario. She experienced every grade from kindergarten to high school. She continued her education, receiving a Bachelor of Arts from Queens and shifted her education focus to high school and guidance. After finally retiring in 1986, she moved into a beautiful waterfront home with her sister Mary.

  • The Stuart Kidd Memorial Award

    Award Value $1,000.00

    This award is presented annually to a deserving 3rd or 4th year student enrolled in the field of economics (Bachelor of Arts in Economics) or business administration (Bachelor of Business Administration). The recipient must demonstrate financial need.

  • The Warren Lindsay Bursary

    Award Value $1,000.00

    Awarded to a Nipissing University student in any degree program who identifies as BIPOC. The recipient must demonstrate financial need.

  • Tom Johnston Award

    Award Value $1,425.00

    Presented to a student to ensure a Nipissing University education remains financially accessible. The recipient must also be a resident of Ontario as defined by OSAP.

  • Treaty No 9 Research Bursary

    Award Value $6,050.00

    Awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student who is pursuing research in partnership with an Indigenous community located within the Treaty No. 9 region. Recipients must demonstrate financial need. The final decision is made by the Undergraduate Services and Awards Committee.

  • Vezina Bursary

    Award Value $500.00

    Presented annually to a student in the Bachelor of Arts Criminal Justice program. The recipient must demonstrate financial need, have a strong work ethic, and a positive attitude towards their studies. Students are required to submit a short paragraph outlining why they feel they are deserving of the award, with specific reference to their strong work ethic and positive attitude, and how this award will support their academic pursuits.
