STATISTICS vs. DATA

In the academic world, statistics and data are very different.

Statistics are processed numbers that provide meaningful information. Statistics are generally "ready to use" for papers, assignments, presentations, etc.  An example is the average income of Canadians in each of the provinces and territories in 2015.

Data, (often called microdata) is the raw information that is processed and analyzed to produce statistics. An example is the individual responses that were collected when conducting Canada's census in 2016.

The middle column of this page provides access to statistics, followed by data. Most of our Canadian statistics and data are from Statistics Canada

Statistics Canada offers two types of raw microdata. Public Use Microdata Files (PUMF's), available via ODESI, are edited, anonymized microdata files. The more detailed microdata master files are only available through the Research Data Centre (RDC).
