Scholarships, Bursaries & Awards: In-Course

The Chancellor’s Medal for Humanity is based on the core values of good citizenry which are:
excellence, respect, and compassion.
The medal will be presented to a graduating student from any Nipissing degree program who has
positively impacted the lives of others while demonstrating a dedication to scholarship and the service of humanity. The recipient must have demonstrated profound compassion toward their colleagues and fellow citizens from a diversity of communities and embody what it means to achieve success with empathy and kindness. Nominations are to come from Nipissing University faculty, students, staff, and the public atlarge. Nominations will not be accepted from immediate family members.

Awarded to a full-time Nipissing student from the Thunder Bay District, with preference given to a student from Greenstone. Preference will also be given to a student who self-identifies as Indigenous. The recipient must demonstrate a positive attitude, a strong work ethic, and perseverance.

The Ilse Mueller Memorial Scholarship In Ancient Studies will be awarded to up to two full-time Nipissing students with a major in History, Antient Studies and Anthropology. The recipients must also be enrolled in HIST 3415 - Fieldwork in Classical Archaeology to attend the Balkan Heritage Field School. The two students with the highest overall average will be selected but must be enrolled in HIST 3415 by March 31st to be considered.

Presented to full-time Nipissing University students who self-identify as BIPOC. First preference will be given to 2nd year students followed by upper-year students, and recipients must demonstrate financial need.

Established to support upper-year full-time students who did not qualify for a NU Entrance Award but have since demonstrated academic achievement and increased their average throughout their degree program. Recipients must have a earned a minimum 80% average, demonstrate financial need and be residents of Ontario as defined by OSAP.

The Jacksons from Lansdowne and O'Brien Award is presented to a full-time Nipissing student who is entering their first year of study in any degree program. The recipient must have graduated from a North Bay high school and have a 70-80% average. The award is renewable for up to one additional year based on the maintenance of a 70-80% average.

Established to honour the life of Jane Palmer, teacher for 36 years, several within a multicultural school, in recognition of her dedication and passion for teaching. The award is presented to a 1st or 2nd year Bachelor of Education student in the Primary/Junior division as Nipissing University. The recipient myst demonstrate financial need and academic excellence. Preference will be given to a student who is from the Manitoulin area, is creative, with some musical background.

These awards will be granted to students who are: • Full-time Undergraduate students entering Year One of any program in any faculty • Canadian Citizens, permanent residents, or protected persons • Resident in Northern Ontario and have graduated from a Northern Ontario high school within the last three years • In the greatest financial need and have overcome obstacles and adversity Preference is given to those who have no other avenues of funding or support in their pursuit of funding or support in their pursuit of post-secondary education. These awards will be granted after consideration of any government or other funding to which the recipient receives or is entitled to. For clarity, these awards are not available to international students. As a condition of receiving the award, the Joyce Family Foundation requires that successful applicants commit to working with a mentor each year in an extracurricular activity throughout their program as a student. Nipissing University will provide recipients with information and/or contact details for on-campus mentorship opportunities. A report from the recipient on their mentorship involvement will be required each year before they are qualified for a renewal of this award.

Established to honour the life of Kenneth Donaldson. Ken was a loving step father to Nipissing Alumni, Lea Cruickshank, who graduated from the Bachelor of Education program in 2021. This award recognizes Ken’s passion for sports and his love of hockey. The award is presented to a full-time male or female student in the Bachelor of Education program. The recipient must also demonstrate academic achievement. Preference will be given to a student who currently plays hockey (competitively or recreationally)

Established by the Kessler family to commemorate Shayla Kessler’s legacy as a Laker. The Kessler Family Legacy Scholarship is presented to a female varsity athlete who plays on the Nipissing Women's Volleyball team. The recipient must be enrolled in the Concurrent or Consecutive Bachelor of Education program with a minimum 80% average.
