Nipissing University researchers secure over $1.3 million in federal funding
North Bay, ON – Eight Nipissing University faculty members have received a combined total of $1,309,163 in grants from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) and Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), supporting innovative research across environmental studies, Indigenous studies, computer science, psychology, mathematics, and physics.
“Researchers at Nipissing University are making important scientific discoveries, meaningful contributions to arts and culture, and are engaging with communities to drive impactful change,” said Dr. Barbi Law, Associate Vice-President, Research, Innovation and Graduate Studies at Nipissing University. “We are grateful to the federal government for their investment in furthering research and innovation opportunities at Nipissing.”
SSHRC Grant Recipients
Dr. Kirsten Greer, Professor in the Department of Geography and History at Nipissing University and Canada Research Chair in Global Environmental Histories and Geographies, has received a SSHRC Insight Grant of $488,950 for her project, “NORAD military legacies: Making visible the compounded historical and present-day effects of PFAS on our shared land, water, and food resources.”
Dr. Tyson Stewart, Associate Professor of Indigenous Studies at Nipissing University, has received a SSHRC Insight Grant of $56,410 for his project, “The World is Upside Down: Truth, Reconciliation, and Noir”.
SSHRC Insight Grants support research excellence in the social sciences and humanities for long-term research initiatives.
Dr. Rosemary Nagy, Professor of Political Science at Nipissing University, has received a SSHRC Partnership Engage Grant of $49,381 for her project, “Precarious mothering: mutual support and solidarity in sex work communities”. Partnership Engage grants support short-term partnered research activities involving a post-secondary institution and a single organization from the public, private or not-for-profit sectors.
Dr. Alyssa Leblond, Assistant Professor in the School of Criminal Justice at Nipissing University, has received a SSHRC Insight Development Grant of $93,632 for her project, “Exploring the Link between Bail Supervision Programs and Net Widening”. Insight Development Grants support research in its initial stages and enable the development of new research questions, as well as experimentation with methods, theoretical approaches and/or ideas.
NSERC Grant Recipients
Dr. Ali Hatef, Professor of Computer Science and Mathematics at Nipissing University, has received an NSERC Discovery Grant of $200,000 for his project, “Theoretical and Computational Exploration of Optical Phase Change Materials for Active Photothermal Applications”.
Dr. Haibin Zhu, Professor of Computer Science at Nipissing University, has received an NSERC Discovery Grant of $215,000 for his project, “Adaptive Dumpster Management Using E-CARGO”.
Dr. Steven Arnocky, Professor of Psychology at Nipissing University, has received an NSERC Discovery Grant of $183,790 for his project, “Good genes sexual selection and the evolution of attractive human phenotypes”.
NSERC Discovery Grants support ongoing research programs with long-term goals and recognize the creativity and innovation that are at the heart of all research advances.
Dr. Alex Karassev, Professor of Mathematics at Nipissing University, has received an NSERC Discovery Development Grant of $22,000 for his project, “From homogeneity to discrete homogeneity”. The Discovery Development Grant program is a complementary element to the Discovery Grants program and provides resources to researchers from small universities to build their research program.
Together, these awards underscore Nipissing University's growing research capacity and commitment to advancing knowledge that addresses environmental, social, technological, and health-related challenges in Canada and around the world.
