Nipissing University proudly celebrated its 2024 Staff & Service Award recipients on November 27, at a ceremony held in the Small Cafeteria on campus. The event brought together faculty, staff, and community members to honour the exceptional contributions and dedicated service of those who go above and beyond to support the university’s mission and values.

Nipissing University mourns the loss of a great friend and advocate of the University, former Gimaa (Chief) of Nipissing First Nation, Dr. Marianna Couchie (Honoris Causa). A highly respected educator, Dr. Couchie was instrumental in building and supporting Indigenous Education at Nipissing University.

Nipissing University is proud to celebrate Anna Przednowek, Assistant Professor in Social Work, who has been honoured with the Violence Against Women Coordinating Committee (VAWCC) Dedication Award. This prestigious recognition, presented during Women Abuse Prevention Month, highlighted Przednowek’s exceptional commitment as a practitioner, researcher and educator in this field.

Each year, Nipissing University recognizes exceptional leaders through the Dave Marshall Leadership Awards (DMLA). Help us celebrate the leaders who are inspiring change on campus and beyond by nominating a deserving student by January 31, 2025. Annually, 25 full-time students are recognized with a Dave Marshall Leadership Award. These students have made an outstanding extracurricular contribution to their academic program, to the campus, or to the greater community. They have demonstrated leadership, initiative, commitment, and an ability to motivate and influence others toward the betterment of Nipissing University.

For Rebecca Wakelin, the path to becoming an educator, and ultimately a leader in higher education development, began unexpectedly. Raised in Northern Ontario, Wakelin’s childhood dream was to become a lawyer. However, while applying to universities, she included Nipissing University’s Bachelor of Education program as a fourth choice, influenced by her roommates pursuing teaching.

As a Geography, Biology and Chemistry instructor and research assistant at Nipissing, Lakers alumnus Ysabel Castle carries forward the values that earned her a DMLA during her student years. Her contributions included fostering critical thinking, sparking interest in geography, and creating meaningful change through research.

As a student, receiving a DMLA reinforced Evan Gomes' confidence and highlighted Nipissing’s commitment to supporting students as whole individuals, both inside and outside the classroom. Today, as a Student Recruitment Officer at Nipissing, Evan channels those same values into his work. Whether encouraging students in leadership roles, or representing Nipissing on the road, he remains passionate about helping others grow.

Nipissing researchers are helping to shine a light on the importance of inclusivity in research. This commitment was on display at the PARN Research Camp, held this past October at Brock University’s St. Catharines campus, where students, researchers, and allies gathered to explore inclusive and participatory research methods. This immersive, three-day event shared insights and skills to improve research practices focused on enhancing the quality of life for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and their families.
