Leadership in Action: Past DMLA Recipients at Nipissing | Evan Gomes

Evan Gomes’ Nipissing University journey began with a family connection. His father’s glowing experience in the Bachelor of Education program drew Evan to Nipissing, where he graduated from the Concurrent Education program with a major in Geography. Once on campus, Evan quickly found his place in the tight-knit community his dad had described.

As a student, Evan’s leadership shone through. In 2013, he received a Dave Marshall Leadership Award (DMLA) in the Campus category for his dedication as a Residence Don for three years and his spirited enthusiasm when cheering on Lakers teams with face paint and infectious energy. “It felt so great to be acknowledged as a leader on campus,” Evan recalled. “Nipissing has so many opportunities for student leaders, and I was grateful to be recognized alongside some people I really admired.”

Receiving the DMLA was a pivotal moment for Evan. It reinforced his confidence and highlighted Nipissing’s commitment to supporting students as whole individuals, both inside and outside the classroom. “Knowing that the university recognized my efforts beyond academics proved how much they cared about our development as people,” he shared.

Today, as a Student Recruitment Officer at Nipissing, Evan channels those same values into his work. Whether encouraging students in leadership roles, or representing Nipissing on the road, he remains passionate about helping others grow. “Nipissing taught me so much more than what I learned in the classroom,” Evan said. “It helped me grow up and feel confident, and I like to be part of that same experience for our students now.”

Evan encourages students to embrace opportunities, even if they feel intimidated at first: “Don't be afraid to try something new! There's always an opportunity to get involved if you're willing to learn and maybe even look a little silly. Nipissing and the rest of the world need people who are passionate and willing to try, so be that person.”

The Dave Marshall Leadership Award nominations are now open until January 31. If you know a student making a difference, nominate them and help recognize the next generation of leaders like Evan.
