Nipissing University will present five outstanding leaders with honorary degrees, the University’s highest distinction, during its upcoming Convocation taking place June 13 to June 15 at the R.J. Surtees Student Athletics Centre.

Growing up in Northern Ontario, Tegan McWhirter developed a passion for the outdoors. While pursuing her Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Environmental Science at Queen’s University, Tegan worked for the Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services (AFFES) division of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry as a Wildland Fire Fighter on the Type I (initial attack) crew.

Nipissing University is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Kristen Ferguson as the new Dr. Elizabeth Thorn Chair in Literacy. Dr. Ferguson is a Professor in the Schulich School of Education and has been a faculty member at Nipissing since 2005.

Nipissing University student, Shandon Ashitei, is one of just 10 students from across the country to receive the prestigious 2022 3M National Student Fellowship in recognition of his outstanding leadership. A well-respected leader, known for his excellence in the classroom, on campus and in the community, Ashitei is the first student from Nipissing University to receive the Fellowship. 

Congratulations to Megan MacKinnon, a Master of Environmental Science student in Dr. Steven Arnocky's Human Evolution Lab, on the recent publication of her research in the journal, Frontiers in Psychology. The paper examines whether exposure to optimistic climate change messaging increases pro-environmental behaviour.

Earlier this month, Nipissing University hosted its annual Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition where 14 students across six graduate programs were challenged with presenting a year's worth or more of research, in just three minutes. In addition to the strict time limit, presenters were restricted to just one PowerPoint slide and the spoken word to relay their complex research to the audience and a panel of three judges in an engaging and easy-to-understand way.
