New StoryWalk invites readers to celebrate Indigenous role models while connecting with nature

Community members can now enjoy a refreshed StoryWalk while exploring the University’s campus trails.

The new StoryWalk, entitled Go Show the World: A Celebration of Indigenous Heroes by Wab Kinew, introduces readers to inspiring Indigenous role models and celebrates their achievements through an engaging outdoor reading experience.

Enjoyed by the University’s young summer campers, the StoryWalk promotes active literacy by creating a fun, interactive experience. It also offers an opportunity for students, staff, faculty, and community members to stretch their legs, connect with nature, and experience a great book.

“It creates an engaging on-campus activity that brings together students, families, and community members around a shared literacy experience,” shared Dr. Kristen Ferguson, Interim Associate Dean of Education at Nipissing University and Dr. Elizabeth Thorn Chair in Literacy. “The StoryWalk also serves as a valuable model for education students, demonstrating effective literacy practices that can be used in their future teaching.”

Beginning at the entrance of the Evergreen Stream Trail, readers will find the first sign and follow the numbered stations along the trail, enjoying the story as they walk.

This year's installation will remain in place throughout the year, making it a learning resource for instructors to incorporate into lessons and class activities.

The StoryWalk is refreshed annually with a new story to keep the experience engaging for returning readers.

Sponsored by the Dr. Elizabeth Thorn Chair in Literacy, this year’s StoryWalk was generously installed by Nipissing’s Director of Facility Services, David Drenth, and Manager, Project and Contracts, Terry Kirkby.
