Shoot for Change anti-racism game returns this Saturday
North Bay – The Nipissing University Black Association for Student Expression (NUBASE) and Lakers Basketball are gearing up for the 3rd annual With1VoiceNight: Shoot for Change Anti-Racism Game on Saturday, January 20 at the R.J. Surtees Student Athletics Centre against the University of Windsor Lancers.
Created by Lakers student-athlete, member of the Lakers Basketball team and NUBASE Co-Founder and President, Taijon Eccleston-Graham, Shoot for Change offers students a platform to advocate for marginalized communities while raising money for student bursaries.
“Each year, this event gives us a platform to raise awareness about racism and advocate for increased financial supports for students of colour at Nipissing,” shared Eccleston-Graham. “Bursaries are an essential component of student success and we are so thankful for the generosity and enthusiasm of the community over the last two years. We look forward to another successful event.”
Tip off for the women’s game is at 6 p.m. with the men’s team following at 8 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for seniors, alumni and students, and free for children under 12 and students who present their student ID. Tickets can be purchased at the door.
A variety of game-day activities and giveaways will take place during half-time and attendees will have the opportunity to enter a raffle (Lottery license: #M853265) to win various prizes including tickets to the Toronto Raptors provided by TD Insurance. Raffle tickets will be sold for $5 each.
Limited edition T-shirts will also be for sale for $15 at the game. All proceeds from ticket, t-shirt, and raffle sales will support the Warren Lindsay Bursary.
The Warren Lindsay Bursary was established following the success of the inaugural Shoot for Change game in 2022 and is awarded annually to a student at Nipissing University who identifies as Black, Indigenous or a Person of Colour and who demonstrates financial need. Since its inaugural year, Shoot for Change has raised over $26,000.
The Nipissing University Alumni Advisory Board (NUAAB) will, once again, be matching donations up to $5,000.
“The continued success of Shoot for Change is a true testament to the leadership of NUBASE and what students can accomplish when they come together to support and advocate for their fellow Lakers,” shared Dr. Kevin Wamsley, President and Vice-Chancellor at Nipissing University. “We are thrilled to once again host this student-led event on campus, for what is a priority at Nipissing University, and hope to see the community come out to fill the stands.”
In 2022, Eccleston-Graham was recognized for his efforts by Ontario University Athletics (OUA) with the Ken Shields Award in the OUA's East Division, an award handed out yearly to a player who exhibits outstanding achievement in basketball, academics and community involvement.
