Nipissing University, Cambrian College professor wins national award

North Bay, ON – Only ten people a year receive this award in Canada, and Laura Killam of Cambrian College in Sudbury and Nipissing University of North Bay is one of them.

Killam, a faculty member in both Cambrian’s and Nipissing’s Schools of Nursing, has been chosen as one of the 2023 recipients of a 3M National Teaching Fellowship.

The 3M National Teaching Fellowship is sponsored by 3M Canada through the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (STLHE). Founded in 1986, the Fellowship honours exceptional contributions to teaching and learning at the post-secondary level.

“Receiving the 3M National Teaching Fellowship is a career highlight for me, and I feel deeply grateful and honoured to be recognized at such a high level as an educator, innovator, and leader,” says Laura Killam.  “I want to express my sincere appreciation to everyone who has supported me along the way. I look forward to using this opportunity to continue to further develop my teaching practice and make a positive impact on students’ lives.”

It has been a banner school year for Killam. She is one of the 2023’recipients of the Early Career Research Awards from the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH). She was also chosen for the 2022 Excellence in Nursing Education (Non-Tenured) Award by the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing (CASN) in November.

“As an instructor, Laura is constantly seeking to innovate in her own classroom spaces, but also engages with her peers in critical conversations about why we do, what we do,” says Dr. Pat Maher, Dean of Teaching at Nipissing University. “Laura works hard to be on the cutting edge of pedagogy and scholarship that will support her students in their learning, but she is also always willing to run a workshop or have a chat over coffee to offer new perspectives that may assist her colleagues in their own development.”

“What an amazing end to the academic year for one of our incredible faculty members,” adds Dr. Paula Gouveia, Vice-President Academic at Cambrian College. “Laura combines creativity, vision and ingenuity and she is leading the way in the country with her innovative approaches to teaching. Even more important is the fact that this award also recognizes that she is always willing to share her ideas and her research with her colleagues.  She is part of a great team we have in our School of Nursing.”
