Giving back is personal for NU alumnus Hayley Heaslip

For Hayley Heaslip, giving back is deeply personal. Inspired by the power of community and what can be achieved when people come together around a shared goal, her diverse philanthropic contributions reflect her passion for giving back. 

A 2017 graduate of Nipissing University’s Bachelor of Business Administration program with a specialization in Marketing, Hayley currently serves as Acting Board Chair of the Renfrew Public Library Board of Directors, supporting literacy initiatives and inclusive programing, a cause that holds special meaning for her. 

“As a kid, I struggled with reading and didn’t know why until I was later diagnosed with learning disabilities,” she shared. “If my voice on the Board can help just one child discover the magic of reading or feel empowered to learn in their own way, it’s all worth it.”

Through her involvement as a working group member on the Bonnechere River Trail project, Hayley helped develop a new trail system that enhances community access to the Bonnechere River, creating opportunities for recreation, wellness, and connection with the outdoors. This project was especially close to Hayley’s heart as she grew up paddling and exploring with her father, but her drive to give back doesn’t end there.

Hayley was among ten women who organized a dance fundraiser in support of a family member who was diagnosed with a Wilms tumor, a common kidney cancer in children, at just three years old. Through their collective efforts, over $16,000 was raised to help cover travel and treatment-related expenses as her family navigated care in Ottawa.

“Today, that brave little girl is cancer-free and living her best life,” shared Hayley, “exactly what every kid deserves”.

Believing in the power of mentorship is why Hayley also volunteers with the Girl Guides of Canada, an organization that provides girls with the opportunity to try new experiences, challenge themselves and build their confidence.

“I’ve worked with incredible women and kids who are learning to lead, dream big, and support each other,” she said.

Hayley says that her time at Nipissing University is what laid the foundation for her philanthropy and taught her to lead with purpose, embrace community, and use her skills to create meaningful impact.

To Hayley, being a Nipissing alumnus means being part of a vibrant, supportive community that celebrates growth, individuality, and purpose.

“It’s where I found my voice, changed academic paths, and discovered what truly lights me up.”

From co-founding Nipissing’s first sorority, Alpha Gamma Phi, to leading meaningful campus events, Hayley shares that her time at Nipissing gave her direction, lifelong friendships, and values that she carries with her every day.

“Being an alumnus isn’t just about where I went to school,” she said. “It’s about staying connected to that spirit of community and continuing to lead with intention and kindness in everything I do.”

Hayley’s advice to future Nipissing alumni is to be open to change, to find ways to stay involved in their community, and to keep their Nipissing connections alive.

“The friendships, mentors, and lessons you gain at Nipissing will stick with you long after graduation. Lean into them, they’re part of what makes the Nipissing experience so special”.

In 2025, Hayley was recognized with Nipissing University’s Alumni Philanthropy Award for her dedication to strengthening her community through service and philanthropy.
