Puck drops Saturday for 10th Annual Paul Nelson Memorial Hockey Game

North Bay, ON – Nipissing University invites community members to enjoy an afternoon of activities and hockey at the 10th Annual Paul Nelson Memorial Hockey Game on Saturday, March 4, at Memorial Gardens in support of the Paul Nelson Memorial Scholarship. Admission is free however, monetary donations are welcome.

Paul Nelson was a hardworking and well-respected student in Nipissing’s Bachelor of Physical and Health Education (BPHE) program. Nelson was actively involved in the community, specifically, volunteering his time with his local fire department. He died in a tragic accident while responding to a fire call.

To honour his memory, Nelson's friends and BPHE faculty members created a scholarship in his name and continue to raise funds for it through this annual hockey game.

Kicking off event will be a free public skate at 2 p.m. Following the public skate, Nipissing faculty, staff, students, and alumni will then face off for the Paul Nelson Memorial Hockey Game.

“Paul was a well-respected student who was passionate about sport and giving back to community,” said Dr. Mark Bruner, Professor, Physical and Health Education. “Through this event and the establishment of the scholarship, we are able to ensure Paul’s legacy lives on.”

To date, over $20,000 has been raised through this event. This year will mark the final game, with organizers aiming to raise $3,300 to create an endowment so that the Paul Nelson Memorial Award can live on in perpetuity. The scholarship is awarded annually to a third or fourth year BPHE student in Nipissing’s PHED: 3016 Coaching course who exemplifies excellence in the development of their coaching philosophy.  So far, 12 BPHE students have been supported through the scholarship.
