NUBASE Reveals Name of Inaugural BIPOC Bursary

On Sunday, September 25, the Nipissing University Black Association for Student Expression (NUBASE) announced that the university’s first-ever bursary for BIPOC students would be named after Warren Lindsay, Director of Services at the Nipissing University Student Union and an active member of NUBASE.

Lindsay was instrumental in the planning and execution of the Shoot for Change Anti-Racism basketball game in March 2022 that raised over $18,000 in support of BIPOC bursaries. His outstanding contributions and impact on students and his peers were the deciding factors in the naming of the bursary.

“When NUBASE had the conversation back in February regarding who we were going to name this bursary after, there was no debate that Warren would be our first choice,” stated Taijon Eccleston-Graham, NUBASE Co-Founder & President. “Warren has worked tirelessly over his nine years at Nipissing towards creating platforms for students to express themselves and planning initiatives to create inclusivity.”

“Words can barely describe how honoured I am to have the first BIPOC bursary at Nipissing University named after me,” shared Lindsay. “NUBASE has had a clear vision and goal since its inception, and with an amazing executive team, and an ambitious president in Taijon, it was very easy to get behind and support their initiatives. To be recognized and honoured with such a legacy is amazing, but our work is far from finished.”

The Warren Lindsay Bursary will be awarded to a Nipissing University student in any degree program who identifies as BIPOC (Black and Indigenous People of Colour) and demonstrates financial need. Recipients will receive $1,000.

“This bursary will be put to good use by students of colour in our Lakers community and will help to make their path to graduation that much easier” says Lindsay. “I'm fortunate that in my role as the Director of Services with NUSU, my team and I have the opportunity to work with, and to support, amazing student groups on campus.”

Applications for the Warren Lindsay Bursary are now open can be found here. The deadline to apply is Tuesday, November 1 at 4 p.m.
