Job Title: Tenure-Track, Assistant or Associate Professor in Wildlife Biology
The Position
Nipissing University is pleased to invite applications for a Tenure-Track, Assistant or Associate Professor in Wildlife Biology. Considering wildlife as all living, non-domesticated animals, we encourage interest from candidates across the spectrum of wildlife species, including both vertebrate and invertebrate specialists, working with animals in a field setting. The preferred candidate will focus on the ecology of animal species and address problems of biodiversity loss or threats to ecosystem function/services. We seek an individual who can make important and lasting contributions to teaching and research that apply to wildlife conservation and management and will complement our existing strengths in forest ecology and other areas of environmental research (e.g. hydrology, geomatics, climate and environmental change). Although an ideal candidate will have expertise in terrestrial ecosystems, the position is also open to those who study aquatic environments.
Appointed in the Department of Biology, Chemistry and Geography, the successful candidate will support existing undergraduate and graduate programs in Environmental Science (B.Sc., MESc.) as well as undergraduate programs in Biology (B.Sc.) and Environmental Biology and Technology (B.Sc.). The successful candidate is expected to contribute to teaching in these programs (e.g. Vertebrate/Invertebrate Zoology, Animal Ecology), and to develop specialized courses in their area of expertise. It is expected that the successful candidate will establish a novel and rigorous field-based research program with the capacity to attract significant external research funding and to provide supervision to undergraduate and graduate thesis students. Given Nipissing University’s location in northern Ontario and commitment to Truth and Reconciliation, experience conducting research in the north and with Indigenous engagement is especially desirable.
The successful candidate will have:
- A completed PhD in Biology or a related field.
- A strong research program, demonstrated through peer-reviewed publications and/or other documentation illustrating the impact of their research.
- The ability to provide research leadership and attract funding opportunities in areas such as biodiversity assessment, species at risk management, and/or the protection and restoration of ecosystems.
- The ability to conduct research that can inform policies and practices in Northeastern Ontario, with the potential for broader impact on sustainable management.
The following would be considered assets:
- Demonstrated ability to work in partnership with government or non-governmental organizations, and a demonstrated commitment to knowledge mobilization.
- Experience teaching and developing courses in an interdisciplinary environment at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
