About

As part of Treaties Recognition Week, Nipissing University, in collaboration with Enji giigdoyang, Office of Indigenous Initiatives, invites faculty, staff, students, and community members to participate in a special Treaty Week Fire & Conversation focused on the Treaty principle of Waawiindamaagewin (mutual promises) and the responsibility of Wampum caretaking.

The gathering will take place on Tuesday, November 3 at the large tipi beside the Library, with two opportunities to participate:

  • Gathering 1: November 3 - 10:00 a.m.
  • Gathering 2: November 3 - 2:00 p.m.

Each session will feature a one-hour talk and question and answer period.

We are honoured to welcome Maurice Switzer, Bnesi, and Chair of the Nipissing University Indigenous Council on Education (NUICE) to facilitate this dialogue. A respected educator, author, and advocate for Treaty education, Maurice has dedicated his career to fostering a deeper understanding of how Treaty agreements shape contemporary life in Canada.

As a University community, we share a collective responsibility to advance the commitments outlined in Nipissing University’s Strategic Plan. Central to this work is Waawiindamaagewin (mutual promises), a foundational principle that guides how we learn, lead, collaborate, and contribute to ongoing reconciliation.

Through this important conversation, participants will have the opportunity to reflect on our shared responsibilities, deepen their understanding of Treaty relationships, and explore how the principle of Waawiindamaagewin informs our collective work and aspirations as a University.

We encourage members of the Nipissing community to attend and invite colleagues, classmates, and community partners to join the discussion.

To confirm your attendance, please RSVP to Sophie Spence at sophies@nipissingu.ca.

We look forward to gathering together during Treaties Recognition Week for this meaningful opportunity to learn, reflect, and engage in dialogue.
