Leisure Learning opportunities are designed and delivered with our region's audience top of mind.  Opportunity to participate in fun, engaging sessions and workshops that will inspire the mind and connect participants to a network of life-long learners.

Summer Series

Extended Learning is excited to introduce our Summer Series! Get your friends and family ready for some affordable, fun workshops coming July and August 2022! Topics will interest a variety of learners of all ages and abilities. 

Hosted by local professionals, artists, and educators, these affordable sessions will be 1 -2 hours long with both face-to-face and virtual options available.  Workshops start at $25!

Join Trista to learn how to maintain healthy habits!  This workshop offers participants the opportunity to learn simplifying strategies for a healthier lifestyle. Miniature Painting

Join Koal to learn about the basics of podcasting!  He's excited to get together with you to create an award winning podcast on a zero dollar budget. You'll learn everything from creating, editing, mixing, social media, hosting, and how you can be a podcaster even if you're recording on an old potato.

Macrame Coasters

Join Cassandra from Northern Knots to learn learn how to macrame two boho macrame coasters! These are perfect for a mug, plant, vase or any other decor you choose to put on them. During this beginner-friendly class, you will learn how to create a DIY macrame coaster under the guidance of your teacher using a universal light, cream colour that fits perfectly into any interior and leave with basic macrame knot knowledge.

Cassandra is the owner/creator of Northern Knots!  During COVID-19 she found a love of macrame and was fortunate to start creating beautiful pieces for peoples' homes!  She believes that macrame is a simple, yet beautiful way to add a homemade creation to your space and is the perfect decor piece all year round!

Cyanotype Printing & Custom T-Shirts

Join Josie to create Cyanotype Prints and Bleach Dye! The creation of artwork often requires the use of our hands throughout the entire process. However, many processes like Cyanotype and Bleach Dye allow the sun to help us along the way. Light Exposure Art Processes is a workshop that includes guided processes in creating Cyanotype printed artworks, and wearable Bleach dyed projects such as t-shirts and bags. Participants will create their very own compositions and designs, while allowing the sun to help with processing time. Participants will leave the workshop with their own paper and wearable artworks.

Host: Josie Morin

Josie Morin is an emerging artist and certified teacher located in North Bay, Ontario. Josie has lived in North Bay her whole life, and has always felt inspired to create artworks within nature and wildlife. Josie recently completed both her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and Bachelor of Education degree at Nipissing University. This workshop will take place at Monastery Hall, the home of the Bachelor of Fine Arts courses, where there is an abundance of nature to be creatively inspired by. Josie works closely with the community, including the North Bay Farmers Market where she sells and displays her artwork. Josie is eager to share her artistic practices with the community, focusing on different and unique forms of printmaking and painting.   

Acrylic Painting

Join Marianne to hone your painting skills! Express your inner artist and create a completed acrylic painting in only two hours. Participants will be walked through each step, no previous artistic experience required.

Host: Marianne Vander Dussen

Marianne Vander Dussen (BEd, MEd, OCT) is an artist and educator, with paintings featured in collections both locally and across Canada. She teaches aspiring artists around the world through her YouTube channel, which presently has 22,000 subscribers. Marianne has taught over 100 painting workshops in North Bay since 2016, and is currently developing online courses and a podcast to continue bringing meaningful art education to a wider audience. 

Computer Basics for Seniors

Join Trevor to learn all about computers!   Technology is an important part of our everyday lives, however, it tends to move quickly and can be tough to keep up with. If you’re 55+ years of age looking to sharpen your computer skills, this is the workshop for you!

The Extended Learning team will call each participant prior to the workshop to determine what you are hoping to learn, so that Trevor can provide a tailored learning experience!

Mandala Painting

Join Kim and Kari from The Work Shoppe for a relaxing hour and paint a mandala on glass with your choice of background and colours!  Bring your creativity and willingness to try a new experience!  This workshop offers participants the opportunity to paint different types of mandalas on a glass frame.

Join Krystal from Grounded Studios to learn all about mindful movement in your life!  This workshop offers participants the opportunity to step outside of their comfort zone is a safe and fun environment.  When we think of Mindful Movement, one might come to the vision of a Yoga Practicioner moving into incredible twists and bends, but it can simply be a focused attention on the movement of Breath.

We use a barbed needle with coarse sheep's wool to create 3D figures that you will be able to design and sculpt yourself! This workshop is great for anyone looking to try out a new artistic medium and it is great for all ages and abilities. No experience required!

Punch Needle

If you are interested in fibre arts, but are not sure where to start, then this may be the workshop for you! Join Rae from Stix & Stones Yarn Boutique to the basics of Punch Needle! Punch needle is all the rage right now and it marries the properties of drawing/painting with fibre seamlessly. During this workshop, you will learn how to create your own designs on a canvas and how to load and use the punch needle tool. This technique is interactive and fun and is great for anyone looking for a new artistic medium to try! Beginners welcome- no experience required!

It’s all about capturing the in between moments of life to help them live on forever.  She is self taught, but has taken many online courses and mentored many wonderful photographers. Emily has a background in honours English studies and education.

Social Media for Aspiring Influencers

Join Mike from Nipissing University's Marketing Team to learn how to maximize your personal social media!  This workshop offers participants the opportunity to learn how to create their own personal social media brand and gain tips and tricks as an influencer.  The purpose of the workshop is intended to show youth the power of social media and how it can be leveraged to grow a brand. The idea behind it being that these individuals can use this to promote their personal brand and any future entrepreneurial efforts they choose to boost their efforts with a strong social strategy. The workshop will cover:

Overview of social landscape
Best practices for posting/engagement
Free tools to leverage for success
Review of micro influencers doing great work

COVID-19 Expectations

Pre-Screening Requirements

In accordance with guidelines set out by public health authorities, all staff and participants must complete a pre-visit screening before using our facilities. If staff or participants do not pass the Ontario Self-Assessment, they are asked to remain home and follow the guidelines provided for self-isolation and testing. 

Please do not attend the workshop if you are unwell or symptomatic.

COVID-19 Safety Measures

Subject to change based on provincial guidelines.

  • Masks are HIGHLY encouraged be worn indoors on campus after June 20, 2022, but not required.
  • Masks are not required to be worn outdoors or when eating/drinking.
  • Participants should sanitize their hands before entering the facility.
  • Regular hand hygiene is encouraged.  Hand sanitizing stations will be available for participant & staff use. 
  • Physical distancing of 6ft or 2m should be maintained indoors

Cancellation & Refund Policy

Please notify us a minimum of one week prior to the workshop start date.  Failure to cancel registration one week prior to the workshop start date may result in full or partial registration charges.  If the cancellation is due to extenuating circumstances, please contact our Extended Learning team to discuss.

Nipissing University reserves the right to cancel Summer Series workshops without notice.  Should a cancellation take place registrants will receive notification in writing with as much notice as possible along with a full refund. 

An administration fee of $10 for registrations less than $200/person and $20 for registrations over $200/person will be applied.

Please note that all visitors to campus should park in the Visitor's Parking Lot.  Please see the image below with the blue markings to indicate the Visitor's parking Lot.

This lot is paid parking and the machine's accept cash or credit.

2. Turn left at the stop lights into Nipissing University Campus.

3. Turn right at the first side street.  You will drive past the library and the Athletic Centre.
