NIPISSING UNIVERSITY convocation 2021 NIPISSING UNIVERSITY COAT OF ARMS There are three elements in the Nipissing crest: the sun, the water, and the owl. The sun, our source of light and energy, is symbolic of the illumination of learning, embracing curiosity and reason. The water recalls the University’s connection with Lake Nipissing, source of the institution’s name (and reason for the University’s team name, “Lakers”), and bond with the Nipissing First Nation, original inhabitants of the region. Like the sun, water sustains life itself, and represents the abundant gifts of nature with which humans must live in harmony. The Athenian owl symbolizes wisdom and scholarship, knowledge and culture. By facing forward, it represents seeing the world as it is and envisioning how it could be, which is the task and purpose of the University. NIPISSING UNIVERSIT Y C O N V O C AT I O N 2021 FACULTY of ARTS and SCIENCE FACULTY of EDUCATION and PROFESSIONAL STUDIES NIPISSING UNIVERSITY WELCOMES YOU The History of Nipissing University N ipissing University is a young and dynamic institution whose strategic focus on student success and experience has translated into consistent top rankings in the country in the areas of student support, student experience, faculty, and residences. The University received its charter as an independent university in 1992, and was created to specifically address the needs of Northern Ontario. Nipissing’s strategic priorities regarding the student experience as well as academic and research excellence is grounded in this commitment. Over the course of the past 29 years, Nipissing has conferred roughly 33,000 degrees and positively impacted millions of lives. Nipissing’s roots, however, extend much deeper, stretching back more than a century to 1909 and the opening of the North Bay Normal School, the precursor to Nipissing’s highly respected Schulich School of Education. As a result of the vision and perseverance of local citizens to establish a university in North Bay, Northeastern University was formed in 1960 and later renamed Nipissing University College in 1967 as an affiliate of Laurentian University. Nipissing is proud to be a primarily undergraduate university with a reputation for excellence in teacher education, arts, science, professional programs and with four distinct nursing programs, it is proportionally the most nursing intensive university in Ontario. As a premier destination for students seeking innovative academic programming in a student-centered comm unity, Nipissing is renowned for its ability to provide a personalized education in a supportive environment with dedicated faculty who are creating new knowledge through research that positively impacts our communities, locally and globally. Students find themselves in a high-quality academic environment that is student-focused and based on personal teaching practices and innovative approaches to learning. Nipissing University is home to a burgeoning research culture that provides undergraduate students the opportunity to perform graduate-level research. Students and graduates consistently give top marks to the university in high-profile surveys that measure student satisfaction, such as the National Survey of Student Engagement. Recognizing the value of supporting an international profile for our students, Nipissing holds exchange agreements with institutions around the world, actively recruits international students and provides funding for refugee students. As well, the Schulich School of Education operates a unique international teaching program which provides the opportunity for students to teach abroad. Access and equity have been a longstanding priority of Nipissing with a focus on students who, without interventions and support, might not otherwise participate in postsecondary education. For example, Nipissing has experienced continued growth in the enrollment of full-time first generation students as well as increases in the number of students with disabilities and number of full-time Indigenous students enrolled at the University. Nipissing is committed to making an impact and playing a positive role in the educational, social, cultural and economic life in the communities it serves. 2 NIPISSING UNIVERSITY WELCOMES YOU A History of Teacher Education in North Bay T he roots of the Schulich School of Education reach back more than 100 years, to the opening of the North Bay Normal School in 1909. The Normal School was renamed North Bay Teachers’ College in 1953. In 1972, the College moved into a new home at The Education Centre, which was specifically designed for the integration of Nipissing University College and the Teachers’ College. In 2010, Nipissing’s Faculty of Education became the Schulich School of Education, thanks to a generous gift from Mr. Seymour Schulich. The Schulich School of Education is renowned for graduating leaders. The school is recognized for pioneering the innovative use of technology in the classroom to enhance learning. It was the first education program in Ontario to implement laptops into the classroom and is actively researching the effectiveness of new and emerging technologies, like the iPad, smartphones and social media, in both a traditional classroom setting and as tools for distance education. The latest milestone in the continuing evolution of the Schulich School of Education occurred in 2012 with the launch of Nipissing University’s first PhD program in Education with a focus on Educational Sustainability. The focuses of the Schulich School of Education are on critical thinking, humane values and practical skills that are necessary to become a lifelong learner. The aim is to take learning beyond schools and direct students to apply their knowledge actively in the larger world. 3 HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT Nipissing University confers honorary degrees upon individuals who meet one or more of the following criteria: national stature, relevance/contribution to Nipissing University, academic background, contributions to society (regionally, provincially, nationally, internationally) and/or sustained contribution to scholarship. The university grants the following honorary degrees: Doctor of Letters (honoris causa) and Doctor of Education (honoris causa). For many years she has volunteered at the local pet rescue and she and her partner rescue elderly dogs who need good, loving homes for their final years. 7 presentation of the chancellor’s award for excellence in teaching (fasbu) The Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching was established to recognize the importance of exceptional teaching of faculty who play a significant role in the education of Nipissing University students. Dr. Renée Valiquette is this year’s recipient of the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching (FASBU). Dr. Renée Valiquette Dr. Renée Valiquette has been teaching at Nipissing University since 2005 in the departments of Gender Equality and Social Justice and Child and Family Studies. After completing an undergraduate degree in Philosophy and Women’s Studies at Nipissing University, Dr. Valiquette went on to attain a Master’s degree in Philosophy at York University, where she also received her PhD in Social and Political Thought in 2018. Contributing to the expansion of the environmental humanities, Dr. Valiquette’s research uses post-structuralist ideas to rethink and reinvent human and non-human relations. In her dissertation, Renée draws on the work of French feminist scholar Hélène Cixous to describe the Anthropocene – the geologic epoch of humans – as an “age of otherness,” that is, a time defined by strangeness, incoherence and reckoning. Such an approach opposes unilateral solutions that have no time for different, particularly marginalized, ways of thinking when “saving the planet.” Viewing environmental realities through the lens of otherness means stepping back, embracing doubt and uncertainty, and recognizing other ways of living and relating as essential to achieving a just and vibrant future. Dr. Valiquette carries these ideas into her teaching in Child and Family Studies and Gender Equality and Social Justice and her interest in families as our first classroom. In her classes, Renée asks: how can 21st century family life be reimagined to better support democratic communities capable of responding usefully and ethically to social and environmental injustice? Dr. Valiquette’s research is perhaps most lively in her commitment to the transformative potential of the university classroom. In 2013, she and Nipissing Professor Dr. Sal Renshaw piloted an experimental interdisciplinary course organized around the theme “DIRT.” The course, officially titled “Introduction to Interdisciplinary Analysis,” has been offered every year since, each time under a different theme. In each iteration, 12 guest lecturers are invited to creatively address the selected theme from their own disciplinary, and often multi-disciplinary, perspective. Guest lectures alternate with seminars run by Renée and Sal. In seminar, students learn how to be curious and acquire knowledge outside their disciplinary preferences, how to make “group work” useful and enjoyable, and how to think critically and imaginatively across epistemic difference. And most importantly, students who take the course acquire an even deeper appreciation for Nipissing’s brilliant professors. The 10th version of the course, wishfully themed “DREAMS,” will run in the 2021-22 academic year. Since 2015, Dr. Valiquette has been working to expand her research on experimental interdisciplinarity through partnerships at universities in Sweden and Norway. Along with faculty at Linköping University, Renée helped found the Network for Teaching and Learning Differently. Dr. Valiquette and Dr. Renshaw hope to resume plans to offer a condensed interdisciplinary course to Linköping students and faculty under the theme “NOIR” in the Spring of 2022. Work is also underway on the establishment of a Northern-Nordic Network for Experimental Interdisciplinary Learning to help broaden such offerings. 8 presentation of the chancellor’s award for excellence in teaching (casbu) The Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching (CASBU) was established to recognize the importance of exceptional teaching of contract academic faculty members who play a significant role in the education of Nipissing University students. Laura Killam is this year’s recipient of the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching (CASBU). Laura Killam Laura Killam is an innovative nurse educator who is committed to “empowering students to learn their own way.” She uses creativity and technology to engage diverse learners in active and authentic learning opportunities. Laura strives to be an educator who students feel connected to and comfortable with – inclusive, flexible, available, approachable, supportive, empathetic, honest, trustworthy, and fair. At Nipissing University, Laura teaches part-time in the RPN to BScN Blended Learning Program. Students have appreciated Laura’s use of live sessions, choices for how they engage in and represent their learning, as well as supportive reminders that learning happens when students go outside of their comfort zone (but not too far). Laura has created opportunities and assisted students to experiment with creative uses of: PowerPoint, game creation, H5P technology, media (including memes), video creation, and more in the online classroom. Students particularly value the way Laura personalizes and humanizes learning through regular video feedback on assignments and instruction. Laura is committed to ongoing improvement of her teaching practice and service. She has been instrumental in helping distance students collaborate and achieve recognition within student government and program decision making. Laura also started the NurseKillam YouTube channel in 2010. This resource has since helped countless students understand complex topics in a variety of disciplines. With over 5 million views, she receives thanks from students across the world. Her expertise in videography in a variety of teaching contexts continues to evolve. She provides an example and inspiration to nurse educator colleagues for her use of technology in teaching and learning. You can find her tweeting from @NurseKillam and blogging from insights.nursekillam.com about improving inclusive education. She is currently focusing her PhD studies at Queen’s University on the use of Virtual Online Simulation in nursing education and advocating for educators to adopt practices consistent with Critical Caring Pedagogy and Universal Design for Learning. She is working with Dr. Marian Luctkar-Flude and the Canadian Alliance of Nurse Educators using Simulation (CAN-Sim) research interest group to improve her use of simulation and engagement in impactful research. In her free time, Laura loves to spend time creating videos, camping and working on do-it-yourself projects with her husband and four children. Its presence represents the authority vested in the University to grant degrees, yet its design signifies more than the right to certify students as knowledgeable; it incorporates all the effort, history and tradition that surround both the site of and the vision for the University. Designed after Nipissing received its degree-granting charter on December 10, 1992, the mace masterfully pulls together the many symbolic elements important to its identity: the University’s crest, the Athenian owl pictured on the crest, the Nipissing University logo, Nipissing’s motto “Integritas” and the traditions of the Ojibwa people who have been keepers of the land on which the University stands. The Nipissing University mace is an expression of growth and transformation within a context of harmony and equanimity with the world in which we dwell, specifically, the Nipissing landscape. From the wisdom of the Anishinabek people, the mace draws the symbolism of the four orders of creation – mineral, plant, animal and human (and the gifts of the Four Winds): • • • • the mineral elements are represented by the local red granite, gold, silver, bronze and polished stones that signify the four cardinal directions – red, yellow, white, and black; the plant world is represented in the form of oak and maple leaves carved into the shaft of the mace; the animal world finds its representation in the owl; and the human element is represented by the hands that hold the mace and the hands that crafted it. As well, in keeping with Indigenous tradition, the mace joins Mother Earth and Father Sky as it journeys symbolically from the fragment of granite at its base through the trees to the golden sphere of the sun and the owl of the air. Like the institution it represents, the mace is not static; it expresses growth, movement and perpetuity. Time is asserted through the four seasons and the transformation of the oak and maple from buds to leaves to fruit. The movement of the eagle feathers, the beads of the “medicine wheel”, and the owl, poised with an ambiguous relationship to flight, add to the dynamics. The University itself is represented by the embossed silver and enameled emblem repeated to form a band, by the four coats of arms that support the crown, and by the embossed silver motto “Integritas.” The mace is designed to represent those attributes which make Nipissing distinct: Harmony – Growth – Perpetuity. 100 College Drive, North Bay, ON P1B 8L7 tel: (705) 474-3450 ● tty: (877) 688-5507 ● www.nipissingu.ca
