Anti-Racism in the Academy Panel Discussion

Please join us for a panel on “Anti-Racism in the Academy”, hosted by the Teaching Hub and facilitated by Dr. Charles Anyinam, Teaching Chair in Equity Diversity and Inclusion.

This panel will take place on Monday, February 28th at 1pm (registration below). Panelists will explore topics of teaching, learning, research and activism through an anti-racism lens within higher education. 

We have both internal and external panelists, who range from undergraduate students, to graduate students, to faculty. Read more about the panellists.

Shelby McPhee is a fresh and emerging voice of this generation. He is a PhD Student in the department of Political Science at McMaster University, and holds a BA and MA in Politics from Acadia University. Shelby is an adjunct professor at the University of the Bahamas. He speaks and writes at the intersection of equity and justice. 

Sefanit Habtom is a PhD Candidate in Social Justice Education at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto. She is a Senior Doctoral Fellow in Critical Studies in Equity and Solidarity at New College (University of Toronto, 2021-2022), and a Pre-Doctoral Fellow in Black Studies at Queen’s University (2021-2022). Sefanit is the co-editor of the recently published book Lessons in Liberation: An Abolitionist Toolkit for Educators.

Tari Ajadi is a PhD candidate in Political Science at Dalhousie University, and a Pre-Doctoral Fellow in Black Studies at Queen’s University. His dissertation research compares how Black activists in municipalities in Nova Scotia and Ontario strategize to prompt change in policing and in health policy. A British-Nigerian immigrant to Canada, Tari aims to produce research that supports and engages with Black communities across the country.

Taijon Eccleston-Graham is a third-year student-athlete on the Men's Basketball team at Nipissing University, majoring in Business Administration with a focus on Entrepreneurship & Innovation Leadership. He is the Co-founder & President of the Nipissing University Black Association for Student Expression (NUBASE) and co-host of the Lakers LockerRoom Podcast, the official podcast of Nipissing Athletics.

Shandon Ashitei is a recent BPHE graduate, former men's basketball team captain, and co-founder of the Nipissing University Black Association for Student Expression (NUBASE). As an athlete, activist, and scholar, Shandon has been driven to make Nipissing university more equitable and confront anti-Black racism. As a result of his activism on campus, Shandon was recognized as a 2021 recipient of the Dave Marshall Campus Leadership Award.
