POSITION TITLE: Biidaaban Student Leader - Office of Indigenous Initiatives (3 Positions)

HOURS OF WORK: Up to 6 hours per week
RATE OF PAY: $15.00/hour + Vacation as determined by HR policy
JOB DESCRIPTION:
As a Student Leader for the Biidaaban Community Service-Learning programs, you will be assisting with the facilitation of activities associated with the Biidaaban Youth Group (BYG) program and the Biidaaban Academic Support (BAS) program.
BYG is an after-school program for Indigenous youth in grades 3 to 6. Student Leaders host a variety of cultural activities, crafts, games and storytelling once a week for approximately an hour. They also support youth with literacy and homework. As part of a team of 3 Nipissing University student employees, you will be responsible for collaborating in the preparation of materials, activity plans and the hosting of activities for BYG youth.
BAS is a tutoring program for Indigenous youth grades 4-8. Student Leaders offer tutoring support for 1-5 hours a week.
Student Leaders complete weekly reports to the Biidaaban Community Service-Learning (BCSL) Officer. Mandatory training will be provided in September.
BYG and BAS programs are offered virtually and in-person. Students may be working on campus, from home and/or in local schools at times.
DUTIES INCLUDE:
- Creating a positive learning environment for Nipissing University student peers and local youth;
- Support and guide youth at the BYG after school program;
- Support youth through BAS tutoring;
- Assist in the development of activity plans and the delivering activities during BYG sessions;
- Demonstrating crafts, storytelling and hosting virtual games;
- Write weekly summary of activities and attend virtual and synchronous meetings with supervisor and team members weekly;
- Completing a year-end reflection on their experience as a Student Leader;
- Other duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience working with Indigenous peoples, as well as knowledge and appreciation of Indigenous cultures.
- Must have experience working with children, planning and hosting activities
- Enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program at Nipissing University and in good standing.
- Police Vulnerable Sector Check required
- Ability to effectively problem solve and make decisions.
