POSITION TITLE: IndigenousStudent Mentor/Tutor – Indigenous Foundations Program (1 position)
CLOSING DATE: August 27, 2021
EMPLOYMENT DATES: September 20, 2021 to April 8, 2022
HOURS OF WORK: Up to 10 hrs per week
RATE OF PAY: $14.25/hr (plus 4% in lieu of vacation pay)
JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Student Mentor/Tutor for the Indigenous Foundations Program will assist in supporting Indigenous students enrolled in the Indigenous Foundations Program through peer mentorship and academic tutoring. As a peer mentor, the successful applicant will welcome new students and establish positive relationships while working in a supportive role assisting with community building through social and cultural workshops and activities delivered virtually through the Enji giigdoyang Virtual Student Lounge and the on-campus Enji giigdoyang Student Lounge as reopening permits.
As a peer tutor, the successful applicant will assist with leading drop in, small group and individual tutoring sessions focused on academic skill building.
The student mentor/tutor should have experience working with Indigenous peoples as well as knowledge and appreciation for Indigenous cultures. The successful applicant will work within a flexible schedule. Training will be provided in advance of supporting students.
DUTIES INCLUDE:
This position will assist with the following:
- Creating a positive learning environment for Indigenous students.
- Assisting in the organization and delivery of study groups and drop-in tutoring throughout the year.
- Serve as a positive role model and establishing healthy relationships with students.
- Attend regular check in and debriefing sessions with supervisor.
- Complete a year-end experience reflection.
- Additional responsibilities as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience working with Indigenous peoples, as well as, knowledge and appreciation of Indigenous cultures.
- Ability to effectively problem solve and make decisions regarding questions students may ask about university life.
- Enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program at Nipissing University and in good standing.
- Demonstrates strong academic skills, specifically in writing.
- Strong communication skills (i.e. email, phone and in-person).
