POSITION:                           Indigenous Foundations ProgramStudent Mentor/Tutor – (1 position) Office of Indigenous Initiatives

EMPLOYMENT DATES:      September 1, 2020 to April 2, 2021

HOURS OF WORK:              5 to 10 hrs per week

RATE OF PAY:                     $14.00/hr (plus 4% in lieu of vacation pay)

 

DESCRIPTION:

As a mentor/tutor with the Indigenous Foundations Program, you will support Indigenous students as a peer mentor and academic tutor. This position will offer mentoring to incoming students as well as peer academic support.

As a peer tutor, the successful applicant will prepare and lead small group and individual tutoring sessions focused on academic skill building.

As a peer mentor, the successful applicant will work in a supportive role with students in the program, by assisting in workshops, as well as organizing and facilitating team-building events.

The student mentor/tutor should have experience working with Indigenous peoples as well as knowledge and appreciation of Indigenous cultures. The successful applicant will be expected to work with a flexible schedule.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES of this position include:

This position will assist with the following:

  • Creating a positive learning environment for new students
  • Academic and social support and guidance
  • Assisting in the organization of the study groups and drop-in tutoring throughout the year
  • Facilitation of skill development workshops with students enrolled in the program
  • Serving as positive role models and establishing healthy relationships with students
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience working with Indigenous students
  • Understanding of Indigenous cultural and knowledge
  • Enrolled and in ‘good standing’ in an undergraduate or graduate degree program at Nipissing University
  • Demonstrates strong academic skills, specifically in writing
  • Strong communication skills (i.e. email, phone and in-person)
