Peer Tutor - Student Development and Services

DEPARTMENT:  Student Learning and Transitions

LOCATION:  North Bay                                                          

EMPLOYMENT DATES:  Individual Contracts (4 hrs/contract) scheduled by Peer Tutor and requesting

                                  student (Tutee) between May 1, 2018 and April 30, 2019

RATE OF PAY:              $14.00/hr as determined by Human Resources policy.




The role of the Peer Tutor is to support the academic development of the student being tutored (Tutee) by assisting in the understanding of concepts in a specific course. Sessions will take place on campus during predetermined times where both Peer Tutor and Tutee are available. Peer Tutors provide expertise, experience, and encouragement. Peer Tutors do not provide “answers” but rather assist in the learning process.



·         Meet with students on a one-to-one or small group format to give learning assistance

·         Review tutor contract with each student during their first session to establish the parameters of the            tutorial relationship

·         Check Nipissing University student e-mail weekly to receive tutorial requests and work notifications

·         Prior to the being considered an “active” Peer Tutor, candidates must complete the following:

o   ​Online Peer Tutor Training modules

o   ​In person training session

o   ​Completion and submission of all required paperwork

·         Participate in at least 4 Peer Educator In-Service Training sessions during the academic year

·         Fulfill all individual contract obligations once signed



·         Upper-year student (2nd year and above)

·         Minimum overall average of 75% and a minimum grade of 75% in the specific courses to be tutored

·         Be available for at least 5 hours per week

·         Good interpersonal communication skills and ease in relating to people from varying educational,              cultural, and social backgrounds

·         Excellent level of responsibility, reliability, and punctuality

·         Appropriate and professional behavior at all times
