Writing Letters

Standard Letters

Standard letters are usually left-aligned and take the following format:

  1. Date on first line
  2. Five blank lines
  3. Inside address
  4. Two blank lines
  5. Salutation (Dear, To Whom It May Concern)
  6. Two blank lines
  7. Contents of the letter
  8. Upon completion of content, two blank lines
  9. Salutation (Sincerely, Yours Truly, etc.)
  10. Five to six blank lines for signature(s)
  11. Professors name, department, etc.
  12. Two blank lines
  13. pc (photo copy) to, enc. (enclosures) ...

If your letter is more than one page, at the top of each additional page place your name, date and page number.
