New partnership offers mentoring for youth with crown ward status

Nipissing's Office of Student Development Services has partnered with the Crown Ward Education Championship Team and the Children's Aid Society to develop a mentorship program for youth with current or former crown ward status. This program is aimed at high school students and recent graduates considering post-secondary education.

The goal of this program is to motivate, empower and build confidence in the abilities of youth with crown ward status by creating events that introduce them to what it's like to be a university student. The program is led by a professional staff and two Nipissing student mentors who plan and host four group events for the mentees over the course of the academic year.

The two mentors were selected through an interview process last winter. These mentors are upper year students passionate about coaching and mentoring students interested in post-secondary. One mentor is a Bachelor of Education student and the other is a Criminal Justice student in the Criminology stream.

Youth and young adults who express interest in being mentored through the program are invited to fill out a registration form, here. Once registered, mentees are invited to participate in events.

There is no fee and transportation and meals are provided.

The first event, Tacos and Games takes place on Friday, November 17, from 6 - 10 p.m.  Participants are invited to cook dinner with the mentors at Governors House residence before walking to the Robert J. Surtees Student Athletic Centre to take in a Lakers Varsity volleyball game.
