Nipissing University’s Department of Computer Science and Mathematics presents Fundamentals and Design of Nanostructures for Nanomedicine Applications on October 23, from 1 – 2 p.m. in room A251, to kick off the 2015/16 high school student lecture series.

The lecture is the first in a series aiming to raise awareness among high school students about possible careers and studies in Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science. Lectures in this series will be lead by Nipissing faculty.

The lecture, titled Fundamentals and Design of Nanostructures for Nanomedicine Applications, will be lead by Dr. Ali Hatef, assistant professor of Physics at Nipissing University.

Here’s an abstract: In the past decades intensive research and development have been devoted to bring basic science, engineering, biology and medicine together to obtain innovative approaches and solutions to current health problems. Nanomedicine, the application of nanotechnology that deals with its applications to the medical world, is one of the most noteworthy examples of this convergence. This talk deals with the applications of optics to nanomedicine, mostly emphasizing the physics and engineering developments.

Additionally, Math Circles will begin on Saturday, October 24, from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. in room H109.

Math Circles is a well-established program that brings school aged children who are interested in mathematics to work together with our students and faculty on interesting and challenging topics in mathematics that are not represented in the standard school curriculum.

The program focuses on problem solving, and the children work in small groups under the guidance of Nipissing students and/or faculty members. Many of the Math Circles participants also participate in the Math Kangaroo contest held every March at Nipissing. Read about last year’s contest here. The Math Kangaroo contest takes place in more than 70 countries around the world.
