Meet student leader Megan Hives

Nipissing students consistently impress as leaders, in the classroom, on campus and in the community.  Recently the university celebrated 25 student leaders at the annual Dave Marshall Leadership Awards.  Over the coming months, NU News will introduce each student leader to the wider community with a short article discussing their accomplishments and activities. Today, we are pleased to profile Megan Hives, a Concurrent Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Education, Geography student and Dave Marshall Leadership Award winner in the community category.

Hives has devoted much time and commitment within the community of North Bay initially as a volunteer Reading Mentor and later as co-lead of the NU Reads program, a free literacy-based program for children aged 4-12 held at the North Bay Public Library.

Hives worked diligently to plan meaningful literacy learning activities for young children in the community, pairing children with fellow education classmates to create individualized learning opportunities.

Under Hives’ co-leadership, NU Read has continued to grow in scope and attendance. Hives not only modeled strategies for teaching literacy to her fellow colleagues, but also a showed a strong understanding of ways to work with children. Hives’ creative ideas and strong organizational skills contributed to the program’s week-to-week success.

The Dave Marshall Leadership Award recognizes full-time students who have made an outstanding extra-curricular contribution to their academic program, to the campus, or to the greater community. Community recipients are selected in recognition of their significant contribution to a community organization or group.
