Introducing the Nipissing Promise

Nipissing University is unveiling a new promise for its students. The first initiative of its kind in an Ontario University and in alignment with the University’s focus on student success, if a student is unable to secure a job in their field following graduation, Nipissing will provide one year of tuition-free university study.

The current rate of employment for Nipissing graduates is above the Ontario average. According to the Ontario Government’s most recent Key Performance Indicators, 90.8% of Nipissing students find employment within six months of graduation compared to the Ontario average of 86.98%; two years after graduating, 95.7% of Nipissing students find employment compared to the Ontario average of 93.56%.

The Nipissing Promise demonstrates the University’s further confidence in the quality of programming, teaching and career development, is open to newly admitted and transfer students with less than 30 transfer credits, and will support students through all aspects of their university journey. Students who choose to enrol in the Promise Program will have an advisor to help navigate each step of their academic and co-curricular involvement at Nipissing, from the transition to university-level academic studies and life on campus as a Laker to beyond graduation. The framework of the new four-year Nipissing Promise Program includes a series of yearly requirements for students to remain in it, including regular meetings with advisors, and the completion of academic skill-based, social engagement, and holistic development opportunities each year.

Students in the program will be invited to return to Nipissing, tuition free, for up to 30 additional credits if six months after completing their four-year undergraduate degree program with a 70 percent average and all required elements of the program, they have not secured career-related employment.

“Nipissing has built a strong reputation as a student-focussed university that strives to position our students for a successful future. The Nipissing Promise is totally in-line with that sense of commitment and dedication to student success,” said Casey Phillips, assistant vice-president, students. “We want our students to know that we are here to help and support them, even after graduation.”

“The Nipissing Promise is a great opportunity for students to get more involved and cultivate an understanding of themselves as learners while developing important skills to help them now and when they are looking to launch a career after graduation,” said Sydney Lamorea, president of the Nipissing University Student Union. “It’s reassuring to know that Nipissing is there to help us after we graduate, just like they were here to help us as students.”

“The university of Regina offers a similar initiative, The Guarantee Program, that has been well received by students. Our colleagues there were very helpful in sharing resources and experiences as we were creating the Nipissing Promise Program,” said Phillips.
