Conference aims to advance health care education

Health care and health education are subjects in which every Ontarian has a vested interest.  Today’s health care students are tomorrow’s health care professionals, working to keep people healthy, help them return to good health and provide comfort in difficult times.  The Northern Interprofessional Collaborative for Health Education (NICHE) conference, taking place this week in North Bay, is the place to be for leading edge insight into learning, practice, and research in Northern Ontario.

The third annual NICHE conference runs October 19 - 20, at the Best Western Hotel and Conference Centre. It is coordinated jointly by Nipissing University, Canadore College, and the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM).

The theme of the conference is Partnering to Advance Interprofessional Learning: Education and Practice. Indigenous perspectives will be highlighted and several presenters will be sharing their perspective on re-imagining the roles and interactions between health care providers and the recipients of health care in northern Ontario communities. The conference will also highlight educational opportunities through online portals such as eCampus Ontario.

Keynote speaker, Justine Jecker, Interprofessional Education Program Lead at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, will discuss ways to enhance Indigenous rural healthcare access on Thursday, October 19, at noon.

Keynote speaker Ken Steele, Canada's foremost higher education strategist, speaker and facilitator, will be present an educational scan of Interprofessional Health Education for northern Ontario, providing a dynamic high-level context for the goals of interprofessional education and ways to move forward, on Friday, October 20, at 9 a.m.
