Break the Ice on Mental Health raises $8,000

More than 600 fans braved stormy early winter weather to support key mental health initiatives and take in some intense Lakers hockey action for Break the Ice on Mental Health.

Organized as a partnership between students in Nipissing’s third-year Sports Marketing class and the Lakers men’s and women’s hockey teams, the inaugural event was sponsored by Scotiabank.

Thanks to several fundraising activities and the generous support of the local community, over $8,000 was raised for two mental health partners: NU Listens and Do It For Daron (DIFD), both of which aim to create awareness, inspire conversations and transform mental health by encouraging people to talk openly about mental health and to ask for help when needed.

The School of Business’s Sport Marketing class organized and executed Break the Ice as part of their course curriculum.

“The students quickly learned that these experiences are about much more than just a grade,” said Dr. Denyse Lafrance Horning, who teaches the course. “They were able to appreciate the incredible demands of planning such a large scale event as well as the rich rewards of working for such an important cause. We thank the many sponsors and donors who contributed to this event as well as the supportive North Bay community.”
