Peer Tutoring - Looking for a Peer tutor

Application for Peer Tutor Service

Introduction

Students requesting tutorial services are required to pay a non-refundable fee* of $25.00, which covers five (5) hours of tutoring. It is the policy of the Peer Tutoring Program that tutors do not provide help with assignments to be submitted for a grade unless written permission has been obtained from the instructor concerned.

Guidelines for Students who Request Peer Tutor Services

The Application Process

If you would like to arrange for the services of a peer tutor, download the form below or drop by the Office of Student Development and Services (A201) to pick up an Application for Peer Tutor Services form.

Once a request for tutorial assistance is received, an appropriate match to an available tutor will be initiated. You will then be provided with the name and phone number of the tutor.

It is then your responsibility to contact the tutor to set up a preliminary meeting (you may meet in the brown lounge, the cafeteria, etc.). If, after this preliminary meeting, both you and the tutor decide to proceed with tutorial sessions, you must pay the fee (see 'Payment of Fees' below) and sign the (blue) contract before the tutorial sessions begin – see the Counselling and Academic Skills Secretary (A201) to do this.

Payment of Fees

Students requesting tutorial services are required to pay a non-refundable fee of $25, which covers five (5) hours of tutoring. (The University subsidizes this so that the tutor is paid at least minimum wage.) This amount is payable, prior to receiving peer tutoring services, at the time a contract is signed. You will be issued a receipt; please keep this as proof of payment.

If you would like more than the initial five hours, simply see the Counselling and Academic Skills Secretary to renew your contract (see 'Renewal' below).

No-Shows

If your tutor does not show up for an arranged session (wait ten minutes to be sure s/he is not just late), you are not obligated to pay for that session (do not initial the yellow Service Record). Contact your tutor to confirm that you did not make a mistake about time and place, and if you and your tutor cannot satisfactorily resolve the problem (there may have been a very good reason for your tutor's absence), contact the Co-ordinator for assistance/intervention.

Termination

If at any time you would like to discontinue the tutorial sessions, inform your tutor and the Academic Skills Coordinator; please note that the fee is non-refundable. If, however, another tutor is requested and available, the unused portion of your fee may be transferrable. Unless the Coordinator is otherwise notified, it is the policy of the Peer Tutoring Program to consider the contract terminated on the date of the course final examination.

Renewal

If, at or before the end of your five hour contract, you decide that you would like to continue tutorial sessions, simply see the Secretary to sign another contract and pay another $25.

Evaluation

At the end of each tutorial contract, you will be asked to complete an evaluation form. Evaluations are used to monitor the use of the Program and to collect feedback and input for changes to the Program.

Responsibilities

It is expected that you will attend all classes, seminars, and tutorials given by the instructor in the subject for which tutoring has been requested. If you cannot keep an appointment, call your tutor to cancel and/or reschedule. Otherwise, the arranged session that you have missed will be recorded on the tutor's Service Record and count as part of the contracted five hours you have paid for. The Coordinator will 'touch base' with you every month or so, but if and whenever any problems arise between you and the tutor or if your needs are not being met, please contact the Coordinator for assistance and/or intervention.

It is your responsibility to advise the tutor of any request for assistance which involves course work that will be submitted for grading (i.e., out-of-class assignments, term papers, take-home exams). If you believe that such assistance is justified or permissible, you must provide a fully completed Permission Form which authorizes the tutor to assist in specified areas of the assignment.
