After completing the Teacher of Anishnaabemwin as a Second Language (TASL), you will be qualified to teach Ojibwe language as a subject, to Native and non-Native students, according to the Ontario curriculum, from Kindergarten to Grade 12. In addition, this program will provide you with opportunities for personal and professional growth.
Qualifications
For this Program, you must be of Aboriginal descent and meet the following qualifications:
- Minimum completion of Ontario Grade 12 or equivalent. Candidates without grade 12 can be admitted if they are 21 years or older and have been out of school for two years or more.
- A one-page statement outlining why you wish to be teacher of Ojibwe.
- Two letters of reference of which one letter is from an individual in a professional capacity who can attest to your level of fluency (Chief and Council, Education Director, Education Authority Board member, Cultural Committee member, etc.)
The program consists of two parts: three consecutive summer sessions at Nipissing University in North Bay, Ontario, and three in-school internships with a qualified teacher, in a classroom setting, during the school year.
Internship One
During the internship you will arrange to teach full-time in a primary, junior, intermediate or senior classroom for a minimum of 30 days (six weeks)
Students enroll in EDUC 1447: Observation and Practice Teaching (Ojibwe) 1 and teach in a primary, junior, intermediate or senior classroom under the supervision of the school authorities and Nipissing Faculty.
Internship Two
During the internship you will arrange to teach full-time in a primary, junior, intermediate or senior classroom for a minimum of 30 days (six weeks)
Students enroll in EDUC 2447: Observation and Practice Teaching (Ojibwe) 2 and teach in a primary, junior, intermediate or senior classroom under the supervision of the school authorities and Nipissing Faculty.
Internship Three
During the internship you will arrange to teach full-time in a primary, junior, intermediate or senior classroom for a minimum of 30 days (six weeks)
Students enroll in EDUC 3447: Observation and Practice Teaching (Ojibwe) 3 and teach in a primary, junior, intermediate or senior classroom under the supervision of the school authorities and Nipissing Faculty.
Please note: Teacher candidates will have to successfully complete 6 weeks in at least two, or preferably three divisions.
