The next intake for the Aboriginal Teacher Certification Program is Summer 2011.
After completing the Aboriginal Teacher Certification Program (ATCP) you will be qualified to teach the Ontario elementary school curriculum in combination with traditional values, culture and art from K to grade 6. In addition, the ATCP will provide you with opportunities for personal and professional growth.
Qualifications
For this Program, you must meet the following qualifications:
- Must be of Aboriginal ancestry
- Completion of one of the following:
- Early Childhood Education (ECE)
- Undergraduate Degree
- Native Classroom Assistant Diploma Program (NCADP)
- Native Special Education Assistant Diploma Program (NSEADP)
- Native Language Teaching Certificate (NLTC)
- Social/Education Counsellor
- Three years of successful volunteer or paid experience working with Primary/Junior division students in an educational setting. Candidates must have a minimum of 700 hours of experience per year.
- Ontario Secondary School Diploma (Grade 12 or equivalent). If you do not have Grade 12, you may apply to write an equivalency test. To get information about writing the test, contact the Office of the Registrar at Nipissing University.
The program consists of two parts: two consecutive summer sessions at Nipissing University in North Bay, Ontario and two in-school internships with a qualified teacher, in a classroom setting, during the school year.
Internship One
During this internship you will arrange to teach full time in a primary/junior classroom for a minimum of 30 days (six weeks).
Students enroll in EDUC 4664: Observation and Practice Teaching (P/J) and teach in a primary or junior classroom under the supervision of the school authorities and Nipissing faculty.
Internship Two
During this internship you will arrange to teach full time in a primary or junior classroom for a minimum of 35 days (seven weeks).
Students enroll in EDUC 4674: Observation and Practice Teaching (P/J) and teach in a primary or junior classroom under the supervision of school authorities and Nipissing faculty.
Please note: Students must do an internship in both the primary and junior divisions.
The Program meets the academic requirements of Nipissing University’s Teacher Education Program. When you have successfully completed the first session of classes, students will be eligible to apply for a Certificate of Qualification (Limited) from the Ontario College of Teachers.
Once all course requirements, and 195 days of teaching have been successfully completed, graduates may be granted a “Certificate of Qualification” by the Ontario College of Teachers.
