North Bay, ON, September 14, 2006 — Nipissing University and Canadore College are hosting a one-day powwow on Friday, September 15, from 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. beside the pond area at the Education Centre. Traditional Native drummers, singers and dancers in regalia, including students and faculty, will be participating in the powwow. The event is meant as a welcome for First Nation and Metis students and to celebrate and share Native tradition. Nipissing and Canadore currently have more than 500 Native and Metis students enrolled in courses. Many travel long distances to attend school in North Bay, from as far west as Alberta to James Bay and Northern Quebec. “Our goal in hosting this one-day powwow is to assist Aboriginal students in building networks, partnerships and friendships among their peers. As well, it is a terrific opportunity for the campus community to participate in a social activity that is rooted in First Nation tradition,” said Laurie McLaren, aboriginal services and programs administrator for Nipissing University. "The powwow is a great way to kick-start another exciting year at Canadore College and Nipissing University. This event is one of many that will bring our campus communities together in the spirit of sharing," said Mary Wabano, director of the Aboriginal Learning Unit at Canadore College. Chief Marianna Couchie of Nipissing First Nation will be speaking and will be accompanied by her community’s Eagle Staff in the Grand Entry. Everyone is welcome to attend and admission is free.
