welcome to child and family studies (single major)

The Child and Family Studies degree incorporates courses from Psychology, Social Welfare, and Sociology. Classes engage students in the discussion and evaluation of a variety of issues including psychological development, the increasing variations of the family structure, the changing roles of men and women, the status of children in society, the role and status of caregiving in society, and violence in the family.

Students who select this degree will be interested in the changing relationships between individual development, family systems, communities and the larger societal culture. Graduates of the Child and Family Studies Program could pursue a career in a wide range of areas including, child welfare, community mental health, social services, community advocacy, and counselling. The demand for qualified people in all of these areas continues to grow.

A Child and Family Studies degree also provides an excellent foundation for individuals who are interested in pursuing other areas of study, notably teaching and social work. There is a strong connection between the Child and Family Studies and Nipissing's Consecutive degree in Education. In addition, with the current shortage of Social Workers (particularly in child welfare) across Ontario, a Child and Family Studies degree provides a sound basis for students who are interested in pursuing a Bachelor or Masters of Social Work.
