The AODA Built Environment Standard was developed by a committee of people from the business and public communities, as well as persons with disabilities.
The goal of this standard is to remove building and other structural barriers for persons with disabilities. Ontario's Building Code has been amended to include enhancements to accessibility in buildings. As of January 1, 2015, new construction and construction and renovations will be subject to updated accessibility requirements.
This standard will enforce physical rules in the realm of:
Entrances, doorways, hallways
Signs and displays
For more information on the development of the Accessible Built Environment Standard, please visit the Ministry of Economic Development, Employment and Infrastructure' website.
