For those using a Mac computer, wherever the instructions indicate to use the CTRL key, use the Command key. |
Chose to accept the licensing agreement. Once
accepted, you will see a page similar to this one. (SHOW
ME)
Click on the Data
link at the top of the Page. Under the People heading, click on the Labour
link.
You will come to a page
that looks like this (SHOW
ME). Under the Census databases, click on the
Unemployment
folder.
In order
to find the smaller area (census tract) wherein your school is
located,
click on the database that reads: "Labour
Force Activity, Occupation and Industry, Place of Work, Mode of
transportation to Work, Unpaid Work (1996 Census of
Population (43 Large Urban Centres, Census Tracts (neighbourhood)))".
Do not do anything
under the Geography section. Under the Selection by Postal Code section, type the postal code
for the school in which you are teaching. If you do not know the
postal code, it can be found at Canada
Post website (SHOW
ME).
Scroll a little further down the page and you
will see the Characteristics section. In the list box, press the down
arrow to scroll through the variables. Find and select the variable
Unemployment rate, population 15 years and over (Under the heading
Total Pop. 15 and over by Labour force activity). It is located at the
top of the variables. Do not do anything else in the
characteristics section.
Scroll further down the web page. There are
several icons representing output format options. Click on the Map
icon (SHOW
ME).
A map of the city is now shown. The
title of the map indicates the characteristic chosen and the city's name.
However, this map includes only the census tract (postal code) you have
selected. Answer Q1 and Q2 now.
At the top of your map, notice the heading
"Click on map to:". The Zoom
function is selected as a default (the dot beside Zoom indicates that
it is selected). The Zoom function is set at x10 (the map will be
enlarged ten times its original size). If you click on the down arrow beside
10x, you will notice that the zoom can be larger or smaller than the default
setting. Leave the setting at 10x for now.
Locate the general area of your school on the
map and click on it. Click on the BACK button and change
the zoom setting if you would like to change the level of enlargement].
Scroll to the top of the map. The function Display name & value
is now selected.
You should now have an enlarged map of your
area. In order to get a map showing relevant distributions for your
local city area, press the back button two or three times until you get to
the "Labour Force Activity, Occupation and Industry, Place of Work,
Mode of transportation to Work, Unpaid Work" page (SHOW
ME).
In the Geography
list box, choose your
city from the list. Make sure that the text box under the Selection
by Postal Code section is empty. Now click on the Map
icon at the bottom of the page.
With the resulting map, change the zoom level
to 20x by clicking on the "Zoom by:" drop-down list (SHOW
ME). With
the resulting map, locate your census tract and the surrounding census
tracts by clicking on the appropriate areas (SHOW
ME). Answer Q3 now.
Click on File on your toolbar (top of
screen). Highlight and click on Print. Check the settings and press ENTER.

Right-click
on the map. Highlight and click on "Save picture as ..." (SHOW
ME). Be sure to save files on the floppy drive
(usually a:\). Type in a filename that captures the essence of the
map and press ENTER.
With the map on screen click on the BACK
button to get back to the page that looks like this (SHOW
ME).
Under the Census databases, click on
Labour
force characteristics.
Now click on the link that looks like this: Labour
Force Activity, Occupation and Industry, Place of Work, Mode of
transportation to Work, Unpaid Work (1996 Census of
Population (43 Large Urban Centres)).
Under Geography, click on the down arrow on the right hand side.
Now scroll down to your province and the city you wish to study.
Scroll further down the web page to the Characteristics
section. In the text box, scroll down to Unemployment rate, males 15
years and over, near the top of the variables. Highlight and click on the variable Unemployment
rate, males 15 years and over. You need to select another variable, Participation
rate, males 15 years and over. In order to select it, you must hold down
the CTRL key and then press the down cursor key once. Scroll further
down in the text box to the variable Unemployment rate, females 15 years
and older. Hold down the CTRL key and click on it. Keep holding
down the CTRL key! You need to also select the variable Participation
rate, females 15 years and over. While you continue to hold down the CTRL
key, click on the variable (SHOW
ME). [ You may let go of the CTRL key now ].
You should now have the variables Unemployment
rate, males 15+, Participation rate, males15+, Unemployment rate, females
15+, and Participation rate, females 15+ highlighted. Scroll further down the web page. Click on
the Reduce or Sort Geo List icon.
Now select your school's census tract and the surrounding tracts.
You will now see on screen the geographic
codes for all of the census tracts for the area you chose (SHOW
ME). Please answer Q4 before continuing.
For advanced users only: If you would like to use the Beyond 20/20
Browser, click here to follow the
instructions. Otherwise, continue with these instructions.
Scroll to the bottom of the web page. Click on
the Graph icon (SHOW
ME). Now finish Q4.
You now have a bar graph on screen with all
of the variables chosen (SHOW
ME). For a more accurate graph title, click on the
"Specify Titles" button, and edit the graph title and
graph subtitles.
Click on File on your toolbar (top of
screen). Highlight and click on Print. Check the settings and press ENTER.

Right-click on the graph. Highlight and click on "Save picture as ...". Be sure to save files on the floppy drive (usually a:\). Type in a filename that captures the essence of the graph and press ENTER.
Congratulations! You have successfully used E-STAT to correlate a postal code with a census tract and are now ready to get gender-related information about this tract.
Click on the back button
until you get back to the page that looks like this (SHOW
ME). Click on the
Salaries
and wages folder under the Census Databases heading.
Click on "Sources
of Income, Family and Household Income (...(43 Large Urban
Centres)".
Under the Geography heading, choose
the appropriate geographic area (census metropolitan area) for your
community.
Under the
Characteristics section,
scroll to the variable Average Income, (males 15+), approximately
one-quarter through the variables, and click on it. Automatically, the
variables you previously chose are unselected. Scroll further down (16
variables down) to the variable Average Income, (females 15+). Hold
down the CTRL key and then click on it.
You should now have the variables Average
Income, (males 15+) and Average Income (females 15+) highlighted (SHOW
ME).
Scroll further down the web page. Click on
the Reduce Geo List icon. Choose
the three or four census tracts representing your school catchment area.
Answer Q5 now. Now scroll down the page and click on the Graph
icon (SHOW
ME). Now finish Q5.
Click on File on your toolbar (top of
screen). Highlight and click on Print. Check the settings and press ENTER.

Use the Back button
a few times until you get to the "Sources of Income,
Family and Household Income" page (SHOW
ME) and click on either Average
Income, (males 15+) or Average Income (females 15+). Now
click on the Map icon.
You now have a map of the area which you choose in
earlier. To get a
better image of your community, go to the "Click on map to:"
section and under the "Zoom by:" button, choose x10 or x20,
whichever you feel is more appropriate. Go to the map image and click
on the area where your community is located.
Click on File on your toolbar (top of
screen). Highlight and click on Print. Check the settings and press ENTER.
