Practice Teaching School Visit Expectations

As part of the teacher certification process, you must be observed and assessed a minimum of two (2) times by your Faculty Advisor. Further observation/assessment visits may take place upon the advisement of the Faculty Advisor, Associate Teacher, Dean of Education and/or the pre-service teacher.
  • I will be visiting your school during the FALL PT placement (Nov. 16 to Dec. 04, 2009).
  • There will be a second visit to your assigned school during either the WINTER PT placement (Feb. 08 to March 26, 2008)
Pre-Service Teachers are expected to:
  • Represent themselves in a professional manner; observing, learning and teaching to the best of their capacities as a pre-service teacher; Model "best practices" for your students (e.g., display a keen energy and interest in teaching; move about the classroom helping out; use positive and supportive language always!).
  • Maintain an organized and up-to-date Practice Teaching (PT) Binder containing evidence of their lesson planning efforts, observation notes on school activities and a record of professional and/or personal reflections on the overall PT experience
  • Refer to the PT Handbook (excerpt) for standards, expectations and instructions

  • maintain contact with Professor Waller on a regular basis to inform him about your overall PT experience
  • this could be a short e-mail or voice-mail to share highlights and/or concerns
  • Please review the visit schedule and route map to attain an awareness of potential visit dates
  • the visit schedule will be updated daily; please check it.
  • Review your teaching duties and discuss visit date options with your Associate Teacher
  • Select a preferred date and time slot (e.g., morning or afternoon)

  • I check my voice messages 2 times per day (morning & evening)

  • I will confirm your visit via e-mail and/or phone
  • If you choose not to proactively select or arrange a date, I will select one for you and show up to observe and assess your teaching

On the day of your assessment, I expect you to:

  1. proactively share your PT Binder with me; I will not ask to see it; it's up to you to share it with me; failure to share your materials with me may result in an "incomplete" grade
  2. share a copy of your lesson plan for the class I am observing
  3. discuss with me highlights and any challenges that you are experiencing
  4. self-assess your performance (e.g., How do you feel you performed? Why?)
  5. self-identify and discuss your strengths and areas requiring "attention
The Faculty Advisor is expected to:
  • arrive at your school (e.g., 10 to 15 minutes) before your scheduled visit time
  • speak with your Associate Teacher about your placement experience (e.g., how is it going?)
    - my questions will focus on such items as work ethic, enthusiasm, people skills, classroom management, workload; their perspective is very valuable because they have spent a number of days with you; if the opportunity presents itself, I will also speak with the Principal and/or VP; I want to get the "whole story" about your performance!!
  • focus on specific major themes as part of my assessment of your performance:
    Classroom Management; Communication & Enthusiasm; Organization (Lesson Planning),
    Support for "Special" Learning Needs, Assessment & Evaluation
  • gather and record observations during the visit which describe your capabilities as a pre-service teacher
  • capture one or two digital photos of your teaching experience (to be included in your PT Report)
  • debrief with you after your teaching to exchange observations about your performance
  • you will receive a copy of my field notes for your records
  • produce an official PT Report to be submitted to the PT Office at Nipissing University; I will provide you with a copy (hard and electronic) of the report for your use (e.g., e-portfolio, resume, etc.)
  • provide on-going support for the pre-service teacher to allow positive learning experiences to transpire
