Volleyball Basics

  1. Warm Up – 2 volunteers to lead on court warmup (including jumps at net, laps around court, spike approaches, etc.
  2. Stretching – 2 new volunteers to lead each group.
  3. Introduction to volleyball – students either love it or hate it! Why?
  4. Pre-period – have balls available for students to work on individual skills
  5. Individual volleyball skills – stress importance of performing properly, modifications (e.g. throw/catch), repetition, multiple contacts

Volley to self – introduce grip on the ball –each with a ball, triangle, forehead, 2 litre pop bottle analogy, gentle touch, catch & volley OK

  • low volley

  • volley, touch the floor, turn around, etc.
  • wall volleys
  • moving volleys toward net, under net

Forearm pass - introduce proper performance; thumbs parallel and pressed
towards floor, elbows locked – no elephant arms!!!

  1. Partner work – where to stand, performer always faces net, importance of tosser, communication, verbal or auditory cue to begin (e.g. slap ball or “ball”), call the ball (“mine”)
    • toss and volley, toss and pass
    • variations to make it more active (e.g. jog, touch tosser’s knee, return to attack line, or run to end line and back to attack line to receive next pass)
       
  2. Small group drills – maximize participation, butterfly drills (toss over net, follow pass), use of experienced players as “coaches”, spike or tip practice (no long lines!)
     
  3. Game Play – serve modifications (e.g. move up), court modifications (split in half to increase number of games), team size modifications (3 on 3)
