USING PEDOMETERS IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Pedometers provide PE teachers with another opportunity to encourage daily physical activity. They are inexpensive, easy to use, and a reliable way to measure physical activity. Students can easily monitor their daily activity, set meaningful goals, and in doing so enhance their personal health and lifestyle behaviours. Classes and schools can work cooperatively toward group goals.

Some things to consider before integrating pedometers into your PE program include:

  1. Introducing the pedometers to your students (how they work, how to wear a pedometer)
  2. Establish guidelines for using pedometers (distribution, collection)
    3. Supervision during pedometer use
  3. Recording step counts (how and when)
  4. Identifying sources of funding for pedometers (local business, parent organizations)
  5. Integrating pedometers into gym classes
  6. Integrating pedometer activities into the classroom
