Parachute Games

Most elementary schools have a parachute, and it can be a valuable asset to your program. The parachute is usually designed for the early primary/intermediate years, but it can be used at all age levels. Some basics to keep in mind:

Directionality

  • forward, backward, sideways, up, down
  • high, medium ,low
  • left, right, both hands
  • clockwise, counterclockwise
  • zig zag

Locomotor Skills - walking, running, hopping, leaping, jumping, galloping, sliding, skipping

Quality of Movement - slow, fast, heavy, light, jerky, smooth, accelerating, decelerating

Body Part Identification - forehead, nose, chin, waist, ankles, etc.

Cooperation and group responsibility

Some activities include:

  • Merri-go-round
  • Ocean waves
  • Body part identification
  • Camping trip – tell a story, sing a song
  • Pitching a tent
  • Rolling out the sleeping bag
  • Ostrich
  • Sunflower
  • Igloo
  • Jump for the ceiling
  • Mushroom
  • Fly-away
  • Making popcorn
  • Parachute ball
  • Number/name change
  • Bean bag pick up
  • Basket weave
  • Burpees, sit ups, etc.
