Basketball Basics

  1. Warm up – dribble tag with variations
    • Knock the ball away from others, if your ball gets knocked away, you have to come to the fitness area and perform 10 JJ, sit ups or push ups
    • Have 3-4 without balls, they try to “steal” balls from others, decrease the number of balls
    • Modifications – decrease the size of the space, change the type of locomotion, left hand only, etc.
    • Stretch – ball handling skills (students can lead, develop a daily routine)

  2. Gather students is – use bean bag to gain attention – toss to students and they toss it back – while you discuss BB – noisiest sport, most exclusive due to # of baskets available; 80% of the time you do not have the ball; more emphasis on skill development to play the game
Basketball is not mentioned as a sample activity until grade 7 (pass an object to a moving partner); Grade 8 – dribble a ball while being defended
Grade 5 – transfer body weight in a variety of ways, using changes in direction and speed (stability skills)
Grade 6 – jump for height (stability skills)
HOWEVER: basketball can also provide an opportunity for students to improve fitness levels (e.g. grade 5 – sustained periods of time 10-15 minutes); follow rules of fair play in games and activities (all grades)

  3. Biggest errors in beginning players:
    • Set shot
    • Off the ball skills: what to do when your team is in possession of the ball, but you do not have the ball at that moment
    • Getting open – sudden changes in direction, hands up ready to catch the ball, eye contact with passer
    • Too much dribbling – de-emphasize this; emphasize passing, moving without the ball, defensive skills – no-dribble game

  4. Development of basic skills of basketball:
    • • Passing/catching/pivoting:
      • ready position (“attack position”) – no ball, with ball, whistle to jump stop to attack position.
      • Pass and follow pass (lines facing)
      • 4 corner pass drill
      • add fakes, different types of passes, etc.

    • Shooting:
      • baskets are not required, and often do not enable maximum participation – use the wall
      • set shot basics – “T” the ball, wrinkle in wrist, full extension and hold - seated, standing, against the wall
      • lay up

    • Defense:
      • Key concept – stay between your person and the basket
      • stance, advance, retreat
      • zig zag progression with cones, add a ball for offensive play
  5. Use of circuits, relays in basketball – evaluation opportunities, skill building opportunities.

  6. Modified Games:
    • End Ball – 4 students in each end zone, object is to throw the ball to one of the end zone players for a score (1 point). No dribble, 3 second rule, starts with jump ball at centre. Change end zone players after 3 points. Corner Ball – same as end ball, except two students stand in corners and pass must be made to corner.
    • Bucket Ball – student standing on chair with small bucket.
    • 3-on-3 Game
    • Sideline basketball (no dribble, alternate passes)

  7. Other: Bump, one-on-one, 2-on-2, etc.
