Unless otherwise indicated, students will be considered automatically for the following academic-based scholarships, which are paid either in January or at Convocation, depending on the terms of the award.
 

All Majors/Programs

 

Shirley Harris Wood Memorial Award

Value: $300
Presented to a full-time female student enrolled in her third or fourth year of a four-year program (preferably in the Humanities) with a minimum 70% average in her major, who was admitted as a Mature Student or as a college transfer and who is deemed deserving by the Awards Committee.

Agnes Macphail Scholarship

Value: $200
Donated by Dr. Patricia Hughes and is awarded to the full-time female mature student with the highest average (minimum 75%) on five concurrent courses entering second year full-time studies at Nipissing.

Mac's Convenience Inc./ Northmar Distributors Mature Student Scholarship

Value: $500
Presented annually to a full-time, Faculty of Arts and Science student enrolled in his/her second year with a minimum first year average of 80% on a minimum of 18 credits, who at the time of admission was admissible as a mature student. Preference is given to students who are the child or spouse of a corporate employee or dealer (Northern district) of Mac's Convenience Inc. or Northmar Distributors. Preference is also given to students enrolled in the following degree programs: Bachelor of Business Administration (Technology Management), Bachelor of Business Administration, Computer Science, Bachelor of Arts (Administrative Studies or Economics). The recipient of this scholarship may be considered for a subsequent scholarship by maintaining at least an overall 80%.
 

Governor General's Academic Silver Medal

This medal is awarded for academic excellence to the student graduating from a three-year or four-year bachelor degree program in the Faculty of Arts and Science or Faculty of Applied and Professional Programs with the highest academic standing.
 

President's Gold Medals

Value: $500
The full- or part-time students graduating from the Faculty of Arts and Science or Faculty of Applied and Professional Programs who attain the highest academic average in all courses in that degree program will receive a President's Gold Medal and a cash award of $500. Students in a four-year program must have earned a minimum of 90 credits at Nipissing University and have a minimum overall average of 80%. Students in a three-year program must have earned a minimum of 60 credits at Nipissing University and have an overall average of at least 80%. Medals are awarded for the following degree programs: Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Arts (Honours), Bachelor of Business Administration, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Science (Honours), Bachelor of Physical and Health Education, Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Fine Arts.
A student may not receive a President's Gold Medal and the J.W. Trusler Proficiency Award at the same time.
 

Carl Sanders Scholarship

Value: $500 & $750
Awarded to full-time students entering second, third or fourth year of an undergraduate program at Nipissing. Students will receive a $500 scholarship if they attain a minimum average of 80%, or a $750 scholarship if they attain a minimum average of 85% on 30 credits over the previous Fall/Winter session at Nipissing.
 

J.W. Trusler Proficiency Awards in Arts and Science

Value: $300
Presented to a graduating student, either part-time or full-time, in each major. The recipients are chosen by the respective faculty of each major, primarily on the basis of academic achievement. Each student must have a minimum 80% average in the course used to calculate the average in his/her major. The majority of credits (24 for three-year degree students and 48 for four-year degree students) must have been earned at Nipissing University. Students with a double major are only eligible to receive one J.W. Trusler Award.
 

Biology

 

Desmond Anthony Memorial Scholarship

Value: $500
Established in memory of Dr. Anthony's passionate dedication to leading edge research. It is presented to an upper year student enrolled in the Bachelor of Science (Honours) Biology program.

Canadian Federation of University Women Biology Scholarship

Value: $500
Awarded to the full-time, female student who has a achieved a minimum 80% average in the first two years of the Bachelor of Science (general or honours) in Biology program who will be continuing full-time studies in the same program.
 

Fine Art

 

Dr. Paul Kelly Scholarship in Fine Arts

Value: $500
Presented annually at Convocation to a deserving graduating student in the Faculty of Arts and Science with a major in Fine Arts, specializing in visual arts, who has excelled in his/her Fine Arts courses. Preference is given to a student who has expressed an intention to pursue graduate studies the following year. Recipients are selected by faculty in the department.
 
 

Gender Equality and Social Justice

Dr. Herbert A. Bruce Chapter IODE Julie Hewitt Memorial Scholarship

Value: $400
Awarded to the full-time student who obtained the highest average in the Introduction to Gender Equality and Social Justice course over the previous academic year, and who is continuing studies at Nipissing University.

Northern Area Women's Institute Scholarship

Value: $500
Awarded to a full-time student with the highest average (minimum 80%) who is pursuing a major in Gender Equality and SocialJustice.
 

Geography/Environmental Studies

 

Ina Hutchison Memorial Scholarship

Value: $1250
Awarded to a full-time student entering third or fourth year of a Geography major with a minimum sessional average of 80% on 30 credits taken in the fall/winter session of second year. The recipients is selected by the Geography department.

Scholarship in Introductory Geography

Value: $300
Presented to the student with the highest mark (combined) in GEOG1016 and GEOG1017.

Merani Environmental Science Scholarship

Value: $500
Presented annually to the fourth year full-time Bachelor of Science in Environmental Studies/Physical Geography student with the highest overall average on all courses taken in the first three years of the program at Nipissing University.

William and Margaret Ross Environmental Geography Scholarship

Value: $300
Awarded to the full-time Environmental Geography student with the highest average (minimum 75%) on five concurrent courses entering second or third year full-time Environmental Geography studies at Nipissing.
 

History

 

Cup Gunning Award

Value: $300
Presented to the person who was a full-time student over the previous year at Nipissing University in a History major, who has shown a strong interest in Local Community History, and is deemed most deserving by the History Department. Should a suitable candidate not be found, consideration is given to students showing a strong interest in Military History.

A.V. (Vern) McKinnon Memorial Award

Value: $500
Presented to the third year full-time student in a History major who has demonstrated an exceptional interest in the study of History, and who is deemed most deserving by the History faculty.

Dr. Robert J. Surtees Honours History Scholarship

Value: $500
Established in honour of Dr. Surtees' dedication, spirit and commitment to Nipissing University. This award is presented annually to a full-time, fourth year Honours History student who makes a personal contribution in the field of athletics or extracurricular activities at the university or in the community at large. The recipient is selected by the History department.
 

Psychology

 

Wendy Jackson Memorial Award

Value: $400
Presented to the full-time student who has chosen a career path in Psychology, has demonstrated outstanding research productivity, and is deemed most deserving by the Psychology Department.
