We are committed to providing an experience in which students thrive. The University realizes the important role the institution can play in addressing sexual violence, supporting survivors and raising public awareness about this serious issue. History and Implementation

In November of 2014, Nipissing University launched a sexual Violence Prevention and Response Committee with representation from students, faculty, staff and external community members. After an examination of Nipissing’s policies and sector best practices, the institution created a Sexual Violence Policy that underwent review by both the committee and student groups on campus. Nipissing University’s first stand-alone Sexual Violence Prevention Policy was approved by the Board of Governors on October 1st, 2015.

In March of 2016 Bill 132, Sexual Violence and Harassment Action Plan Act (Supporting Survivors and Challenging Sexual Violence and Harassment), was given Royal Assent by the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. Bill 132 contains obligations for colleges and university regarding sexual violence involving students. The Act has required colleges and university to have stand-alone sexual violence policies that set out the process that will apply when incidents of sexual violence are reported. As anticipated, additional details regarding the implementation of policy was provide by the Ministry in May of 2016. The details are outlined in O.Reg. 131/16: Sexual Violence at Colleges and Universities.

Following the announcement of these regulations the University consulted with students, faculty and staff in the revisions to the original policy. These consultation have included feedback from student leaders including those from Residence Life, Varsity Athletics, the Gender Equality and Social Justice Student Collective, NUSU and the Office of Aboriginal Initiatives. Additionally, the University offered an open call for feedback on the draft policy in November, 2016.

The updated Sexual Violence Prevention, Support and Response Policy will serve as a standard for the University in responding to disclosures of sexual violence, supporting and responding to survivors on our campus.

This Policy was approved by the Board of Governors at the Executive Meeting on December 13th, 2016.
